North American X-15 Owner's Workshop Manual: All types and models 1959-1968, by David Baker

A unique Haynes Manual, providing fascinating technical insight into the development and use of rocket planes, focusing on the iconic X-15, which carried out much of the development work for the Apollo and Space Shuttle space programmes. As of July 2015, the X-15 still holds the world record for the highest speed ever attained by a manned aircraft, at 4,520mph (Mach 6.72)! The X-15 was flown by a band of elite test pilots, including the first man to walk on the Moon, Neil Armstrong. The X-15 made 199 flights between 1959 and 1968, several of which were above the line considered to be the arbitrary altitude where space begins. The engaging text, extensively illustrated with period photographs and technical illustrations, explains how the vehicle worked, what it pioneered for future applications in more conventional aircraft and manned spacecraft developed by NASA from 1958, and what it was like to fly.

Not "Hypersonic," but still pretty good
By Daryl Carpenter
The main obstacle this book has to overcome is Dennis Jenkins' and Tony Landis' superb Hypersonic: The Story of the North American X-15. While that book is a more polished and in-depth affair than this "manual," this book is nonetheless a very solid reference work in it's own right. Novelty format aside, it's a straightforward technical study of the aircraft, rather densely written and heavily illustrated with block diagrams, line graphs, and systems schematics. There are plenty of photographs, although I know the serious space geeks among us will be too busy studying SAS failure rates and IFDS flow charts to notice.

David Baker has always been an exceptionally in-depth space historian, and this book is no exception. Want to know what kind of hydraulic fluid the X-15 used, the capacity of the ammonia tank, the design tolerances of the Inertial Flight Data System, or the tensile strength of Inconel-X? You'll find it here. Considering the two surviving X-15s are preserved in museums and not being restored to flight status, this book does differ somewhat from the traditional Haynes format. The historical and technical sections are more closely intertwined, rather than being segregated into different chapters. There's a heavy focus on development, especially on the 1956 design competition, the choice of engine, and the various carrier plane options. The chapter on follow-up concepts is particularly interesting, featuring designs for a two-manned X-15B, a delta-winged X-15-3, and other concepts.

The editing could use some polishing, especially in the photo captions. The B-58, perhaps confused with the B-70, is repeatedly referred to as a Mach 3 bomber, and three different dates are given for the death of Milburn Apt. The book starts off rather shaky, with a brief introduction to early American rocketry that comes across as padding. Many of the illustrations in this book are also present in "Hypersonic," although there's quite a bit of new material here I hadn't seen before. Labeling it a "rehash" would be too harsh.

Although "Hypersonic" remains the best single-volume technical history of the X-15, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not perfect, but I think X-15 fanatics will find much to love here.
