One of my favorite texts

I love this desk reference! It is a great starting point for everything social workers need to know. The chapters are written by various prominent scholars in the field, in their areas of expertise. Each chapter is built on the foundational knowledge of preexisting literature and how it relates to current day social work areas of interest. I began my MSW program a few years ago, and I wish that I had this book sooner in my journey. It would have given me a great point of reference for most of the topics we covered in my first year. I would have rather read chapters of this book before other texts because this textbook is more clearly written and nicely organized than some of my other texts. These chapters set a good foundation for students or social workers from which to build greater knowledge. Most of the chapters are relatively in depth, and they each provide websites, references, and other helpful information at the end of the chapter. I have the kindle version of this book, which I love. The Kindle is nice because I can have my iPhone read the book to me as I drive. I also purchased a hard copy of this book as well, because I like having a tangible item when I know I am going to be referencing the text frequently. You can take notes and highlight in Kindle, which saves across devices. You to access the book very easy because the Kindle app or website is available everywhere. Whichever version of this book you choose, you will be happy with it. The Kindle makes it easier to access, provides reading options, notes, and highlighters. The hardcopy may be better if you like a tangible book to highlight, take notes, etc. This book is enormous, so it is not the easiest to carry around, especially if you have other things on you. Both versions have an excellent layout and are easy to read.

Timothy Shriver is a social leader, educator, activist, film producer, and business entrepreneur. He is the third child of Eunice Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics. As chairman of the Special Olympics, he serves more than three million athletes in 180 countries. He cofounded and currently chairs the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the leading research organization in the United States in the field of social and emotional learning. Shriver earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, a master's degree from Catholic University, and a doctorate in education from the University of Connecticut. He lives in Maryland with his wife and five children.

On my flight from DC home to LA last night I read Fully Alive. It is a powerful book that Tim has written. Breaking the “code of silence” about Rosemary opens one’s eyes to the shame that is associated with intellectual disabilities, both from the individual’s prospective as well as their loved ones. Tim’s vulnerability, insight and honest hopefully will remind this world that perception is not always reality. And IF we looked at other peoples similarities versus their difference the world would be a greater place.

At times, I had to take a break from the book because of the rawness of the story, but then 10 minutes later was pulled back because of the excellent writing. I hope others will read this book and find it as meaningful as I did. It has me wanting to join the fight against intolerance

This is one of the best "Kennedy" books I've ever read

This is one of the best "Kennedy" books I've ever read. Like the rest of the world, I greatly admired Tim Shriver's late mother, Eunice. In my eyes, the woman was a saint. Reading this book, I don't know where Eunice Shriver got her qualities from - because she clearly didn't inherit any of her goodness from either of her parents. Joe and Rose Kennedy couldn't accept, or love, their oldest daughter. The reason being - Rosemary wasn't perfect. She was all of age 12 - when her parents sent her far away, in another state, to a boarding school for the feeble minded. It's heartbreaking to read one of the letters Rosemary wrote to her cold mother. It's obvious Rose Kennedy never bothered to write her own daughter. Rosemary may have been "slow" but she was not disabled - at least not until Joe Kennedy made her disabled. Unbelievably, after Joe Kennedy destroyed his beautiful daughter with his forced lobotomy, she became dead to him. He sent her thousands of miles away from the Kennedy's, and never saw her again. Rose Kennedy shunned their daughter as well. The Kennedy parents even lied to their other children about their sister's whereabouts. I was reduced to tears a few times reading Tim's book. I'm glad I read Fully Alive because I've always wondered about Rosemary. I thought this was a beautiful tribute to her. Tim Shriver is an outstanding writer and seems full of kindness and compassion for people. I couldn't put the book down. Kudo's to Tim Shriver.

The Secret and Exceptional Life of Rosemary Kennedy....

This beautifully written courageous memoir authored by Timothy Shriver is a tribute to his late aunt Rosemary Kennedy (1918-2005), and thoughtfully raises awareness of the history, stigma, misinformation associated with people having physical and intellectual disabilities, while at the same time celebrating their humanity.

It is good that the term "mental retardation" is no longer used. This was not the case in 1941 when psychosurgery was a popular method to correct defective brain conditions and behavior problems. Joe Kennedy agreed to a prefrontal lobotomy for his oldest daughter Rosemary, who was then 23, and living in a Wisconsin Catholic boarding school for "exceptional" children. Rosemary was academically behind, and lacked the emotional maturity of a typical woman her age. Beautiful as her sisters, she attended social functions with family members on occasion, and never deserved to be labeled as retarded. The angry tantrums and outbursts she had were of great concern to her parents.

It was a fact that the ambitious Joe Kennedy had extremely high standards for his 9 children. They were expected to engage in civic and political pursuits with the goal of the US Presidency for his sons, there were few exceptions. Shriver suggests Rosemary did not fit her fathers ideal, or meet his lofty expectations, and was unable function well in the busy competitive Kennedy family environment. There may have been a possibility of an undiagnosed mental disorder. Shriver writes with understanding and compassion, readers will draw their own conclusions about the treatment of Rosemary by her parents.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver brought Rosemary to her home for family visits, her children knew their aunt well. "Camp Shriver" (1962) opened on her Maryland farm for disabled people. In 1968 Eunice's vision to advocate and provide competitive sporting events for people with physical and intellectual disabilities became the Special Olympics. Currently, Timothy Shriver is the Chairman of the Special Olympics that serve people with disabilities in 40 countries worldwide. Great photos included.

Good 'could be' story

This story had a good outline of a story that would be pretty good though very twilightish.
The story itself has very bad grammar with a "i said..., he said...., we did...., etc," this makes the story very hard to read because it gets really annoying. Also at times the writer forgets that she wrote one thing, so the next paragraph it contradicts what she said in the paragraph before.
Dont buy this book until this writer has gotten a better editor to actually go over the story!

Incredible Story!

I purchased this title for my kindle, and I could not put it down. I'm not even very far into the book, but it captured my attention immediatly! Micalea does an amazing job. The visualization, romance and a spark of adventure really bring this story to life! This is not just another cheesy Twilight knockoff, its a great story that is beautifully told and has an impressive and intriguing storyline!!

The good:

I really like the plot of this story, its different and had great potential. I enjoyed it enough to continue on to the second book of the series.

The bad:
The typo's and grammatical errors of this book were worse than I have seen in any other e-book I have ever read. It's as if this book wasn't even proof read once. I found the writing to be choppy, and lack any flow.

Also, the characters mental ramblings are so repetitive its just annoying to even read, I found myself skimming. Its as if every few paragraphs shes stops to once again go on about "I just love him I don't know how but we are perfect for each other..blah blah" its nice to have a little of that but she goes on about it to such an extent that it passes up romance and goes straight to irritating.

There are many similarities to twilight, and it gets even worse in the second book.
