About the Author
Dr. James B. Kaler is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research area, in which he has published over 100 papers, involves dying stars. He has held Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, has been awarded medals for his work from the University of Liege and the University of Mexico, has written for a variety of magazines, was a consultant for Time-Life Books on their Voyage Through the Universe series, and appears frequently on Illinois television and radio. His books include Stars and their Spectra (Cambridge University Press), Stars (Scientific American Library), Astronomy! (HarperCollins), The Ever-Changing Sky (Cambridge), Astronomy! A Brief Edition (Addison-Wesley), and Cosmic Clouds (Scientific American Library). He has also developed, with Sarah Kennedy, the scientific kit Elements of the Universe. He is a past president of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony.

Observatory backup book. High school senior or College 101 Astronomy course

As an amateur astronomer of 40 years I wanted a backup book for myself and others to use for our astronomy club to be used at our observatory.

Even though this book is dated 1994 most of the information is fine and will not change. You may need a later copy for exoplanet exploration or specific technology after 1994. I got a used copy in good condition for about $1.50 plus shipping and handling. Fine for general Astronomy.

Lots of color pictures. James Kayler uses a sensible method of explaining from the simpler subjects to the more complex. There are elementary and more advanced questions and answers on each subject. The book would make a great textbook for a high school senior or college freshman taking an Astronomy 101 course. Not too difficult in math and most should be able to follow the subjects without too much difficulty.

Parts are...Classical, Physical,Planetary and Stellar Astronomy. Birth and Death In the Galaxy and Galaxies and the Universe. James Kayler did a good job and covered all the important bases. This book should give readers the knowledge and excitement of Astronomy for them to explore the wonders of the Universe more. 4 stars and recommended.

About the Author

Nicolas Collins, an active composer and performer of electronic music, and has worked with John Cage, Alvin Lucier, David Tudor, and many other masters of modern music. Dr. Collins is Professor of Sound at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has led hacking workshops around the world. He has been Visiting Artistic Director of STEIM (Amsterdam) and a DAAD composer-in-residence in Berlin. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of Leonardo Music Journal.

Rediscovers the simple facts of electronic music

Ever since products such as GarageBand took over the low-level tasks of producing electronic music and turned us all into application users, much has been forgotten about making music with low-level electronic components. In the case of younger electronic musicians, this may be an art form they never even knew in the first place. Although there is an advantage is computer musicians speaking a common language through a common application, something fascinating in the realm of experimentation has been largely lost. This book returns to the days of yesteryear with some projects in making your own electronic music with basic devices.

The book starts with some brief information on the tools you'll need plus the author's seven rules for experimentation. Part two is dedicated to listening. He shows you how to use radios and coils to find hidden electronic music, how to use the speaker as a microphone and vice versa, and how to use piezo disks to pick up tiny sounds, among other topics. Part three, on touching, shows you how to transform a portable radio into a synthesizer, change the clock circuit in toys to produce new sounds, and use photocells and pressure pads to "play" the modified toy. Part four, Building, shows the reader how to breadboard up some oscillators along with some controlling circuitry and produce gating, ducking, tremolo and panning effects. Part five, Looking, concerns translating video to audio using commonly found devices. The final section goes into depth on mixing circuits, how to build a good but cheap amplifier, connecting sensors to computers via game controllers, and a section on power supplies.

The book is written such that you should proceed from beginning to end, since the devices in earlier sections are used to assemble the devices in later chapters. By the time you finish you should have entire experimental musical instruments that you have assembled yourself.

You can do better..

Guess this is a great book if you really, reaaaally are a beginner. It teaches you soldering, and tells your about how to use a breadboard.

Yet if you were looking for a *real* book on "handmade electronic music" which tells you about circuits, opamps, various oscillator circuits, modulation etc, then this book is a real joke.

More than half of the book is full of extremely basic - and usually worthless - stuff, such as "Hacking the Clock" of a toy, which drives it to generate sounds at a higher frequency. It is clear that Mr. Collins understanding of music is a bit different than what most people have in mind.

Only after passing more than half of the book, there was a part about actually building some circuits. And no, it was not a complex, music generating circuit. It was just a bunch of oscillators wired together.

There are nearly no circuits in this book. Concepts such as modulation, empedence, loads, operational amplifiers, signals are non existant in this book.

Last but not least, it was really an expensive book. You can easily add something like 20 dollars more and get a *real* book on audio circuits, which I did after getting a refund on this one.

Go Beyond Circuit Bending

Circuit Benders - if you are ready for something different get of a copy of Collins' informative book. It covers a wide variety of approaches for creating unusual sounds (and sights) in a low tech, user friendly manner. For example, the chapter on making an oscillator uses photos of the breadboard as well as schematics. As someone who finds electronic diagrams intimidating, Collins' approach made construction a snap. It also helped me better understand how to read schematics. Creating visuals with LCDs and by altering video cameras further expand the realms of hacking. The included CD features work by artists and musicians using devices found in the book. What a great idea. Very inspiring. I wish the Ghazala book (which is also great)had a similar CD. Sources for parts, websites and additional information galore make this a must have item.

Absolutely brilliant book!! Loved it!!!

When I read the preview sample of Fog, it didn't immediately grab me, however I wanted to know what happened further, so bought the book. Well, what can I say? Although I found the very beginning a little slow, it was definitely worth carrying on with, as the story very quickly picked up the pace and very soon I was literally LOL'ing on just about every page. There was more than enough action to keep things exciting, as well as a good storyline that made me want to find out what was going to happen. I loved all the characters-even the bad guys, while not exactly lovable, were credible and made me want to know what would happen with them.The ending was unexpected, I did not see that coming at all, and although I initially thought "ohhh, no", the more I thought about it, the more I felt the ending made sense. It just wasn't your usual run-of-the-mill ending.But extremely well done, just the same. Honestly I cannot recommend this book highly enough-easily the most enjoyable book I have read for a long, long time.Fantastic.

such a great story

An excellent read. This story begins with a thick fog, in the main characters mind and around him. There are severed body parts in the car and people hunting him.
This is part mystery with a dark twist, and the whole thing is written in a great, off handed sometimes comical style. The writer is so obviously from England so you might miss a few things when it comes to references or some of the dialogue but I doubt it will matter
The story is very exciting as the main character begins to unravel the mystery of who is hunting him. He will get help along the way from some very unusual and interesting people. And the whole thing comes to a dramatic climax in a very unexpected manner.
I found this one to be funny, a little bit sad, full of clever wit and interesting dialogue. As with any great story it felt like it ended way too soon because I had raced all the way through it determined to find out what happens on the end.

Fast, fun, dangerous and devilish!

This spy-thriller romp balances humor and edge-of-your-seat terror beautifully - no mean feat. A fast and enjoyable read, Fog would make an ideal vacation novel. The story compels and unnerves, but Wombat keeps the mood from being too tense - and his unusual characters from being too clich�d - with laugh-out-loud normal-human details. There are a wealth of movie references here for those who enjoy a good in-joke, but the book's enjoyable even if you don't catch all of them. Certainly not a deep or serious read, but one guaranteed to bring a grin to your face (and a gripping handful of exciting moments to your knuckles).

We had multiple rotations while in school. A lot of the time there was little to know warning what all went on in each modality. "Oh my goodness! I'm so nervous. What do they even DO in the Cath Lab????" Comments like that will be eased with this book. There are short concise overviews of things that go on in special modalities. Very helpful.
