Jerry Whitaker, Editor in Chief, is Vice President of Standards Development for the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) in Washington, D.C. He is the author or editor of more than 40 technical books, including The DTV Handbook, The Standard Handbook of Video and Television Engineering, The Standard Handbook of Audio and Radio Engineering, and Communications Receivers. Mr. Whitaker is a Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers.
The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) is the only organization devoted to the advancement of all levels and types of broadcast engineering. Eye candy for engineers.

Wow, this handbook came as a pleasant surprise. This 2016 first edition of the SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook is pretty impressive; it fulfills its claimed purpose of a "hands on guide" for broadcast station design and maintenance. The contributing authors read like a Who's Who in the broadcast engineering field, and the editor-in-chief is Jerry Whitaker, VP of Standards Development for the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), former SBE President, SBE Fellow, and author of more than thirty books on technical topics.

The SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook contains cutting edge information on virtually every aspect of broadcast station design and operations, both radio and TV, including the now proposed ATSC 3.0. My favorite chapter was Chapter 5.11 on electronic news gathering (ENG) systems using cellular frequencies (aka bonded ENG), as opposed to Broadcast Auxiliary Service (BAS) frequencies. I forgive the author of that chapter for his dig about "dated" point-to-point microwave technology, because for truly major news events (e.g., Katrina, or out here in California, earthquakes), you had better not be relying on the continued availability of terrestrial commercial mobile radio service (CMRS) phones; only Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) handsets and BAS gear at hardened broadcast sites are likely to still be working during such scenarios.

But I digress. Like the NAB Engineering Handbook, all of the figures are black & white. However, the most recent edition of the NAB Engineering Handbook is the tenth edition dating from 2007, whereas the SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook has the advantage of addressing advances in broadcast engineering in the succeeding nine years. So, while NAB is working on an updated 11th edition of its engineering handbook, that update is still a year away.

Other contrasts are the size and weight: The NAB Engineering Handbook is 8 1/2 x 11 inches, over 2,000 pages, and weighs more than ten pounds; the SBE Broadcast Engineering handbook is a more compact 7 x 9 inches, 912 pages, and weighs 3.5 pounds. So the SBE handbook is a lot easier to pull out for reference than the big daddy NAB handbook.

I expect that the 2016 SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook will turn out to compliment rather than compete with the in-the-works 11th edition of the NAB Engineering Handbook, and so can recommend adding the SBE Broadcast Engineering handbook to your technical library now, especially if you're in the engineering side of broadcasting.

About the Author
Taylor Ann Bunker grew up outside of Denver Colorado in a big family and had always aspired to have her own band and to be a world traveler. After struggling with guitar and realizing travel is very costly, she turned to her one REAL love, writing. As a child and young adult, Taylor had always been fascinated with the paranormal and spooky things in general. This led to her writing creative short stories and reading books by the hundreds. Having had many stories published in local news papers and this love for reading, prompted Taylor to begin her 1st Y.A. Paranormal Fantasy series “Witch In The Woods” with the sequel, “Clearly’s Corruption” now available and the final book of the series to be released soon. When not writing or ghost hunting, you can find Taylor hiking, visiting ghost towns, watching spooky movies, and enjoying another love of hers, chocolate and peanut butter!

Not Your Everyday Paranormal

I was pleasantly pleased and surprised by Witch In The Woods. I love the title: simple yet elegant. Taylor Ann Bunker has an imagination out of this world and does her homework as well in this romping witch hunt set in colonial times. Victor Steep is the courageous witch hunter and hero who, against all odds, does battle against the, more than match, lethal witch. A good amount of chapters start with Steep reading from his journal which is a wonderful touch.

Bunker is masterful in the way she seamlessly weaves colorful descriptions and vivid details into the narrative, action, and dialog of the story. At times I felt like I was watching a movie. And if your heart wasn’t beating fast enough with fear in the dark woods of Beth’s Hollow, then it’ll beat for that YA young love when Steep runs into Clearly Willow. Bunker has a gift when it come to creating characters. I especially like the contrast between the characters: the true mark of a talented author. This is most evident in the dialog between Gammer and Steep.

I read WITW in a day. This one has it all. The Misercorde Dagger is cool, but I gotta get me one of those dagger pistols and start a collection.

Witch in the Woods was a really fun start to another witch trilogy that I can't wait ...

Victor is a witch hunter that has been drafted to Beth's Hollow to determine who this witch is that has been harassing the townspeople for years. After more and more people reportedly go missing once they enter the woods, Victor takes the task upon himself to bring this witch down. Little did he know that he would begin to develop feelings for those he would meet in the woods or that he would develop a new found respect for his deceased father in the process.

A solid 4/5, Witch in the Woods was a really fun start to another witch trilogy that I can't wait to continue! A debut novel from this author, you can tell how much she enjoyed writing the characters as the storyline progressed. Victor is one of my favorite characters that I read in 2014. I need to get books 2 and 3 ASAP!

Bunker's smooth writing helped me to settle into this comfortable and easy read, despite the fact that it's a dark fantasy with paranormal elements. The Gothic horror tone was consistent and enjoyable, reminding me of favorites such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Frankenstein. The author made her own contribution to the genre with a creative spin on the paranormal. I noticed some typos here and there, but that didn't keep me from wanting to continue. I'd love to find out more about Fabian and his perspective on all that has transpired. The title of the second book in the series is worrisome, but all the more reason to find out what happens.

When I ordered this book I was expecting a paper back book; however, the hard back was a nice surprise. I expected the book to arrive weeks before it did but I had a borrowed copy that held me over until it came. The late arrival made it difficult to prepare for class though.

About the Author

PAUL IGANSKI, Ph.D. is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the Lancaster University Law School, UK, and a member of the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science at Lancaster. For a decade-and-a-half he has specialized in research, writing, teaching, and public engagement about hate crime. His books include Hate Crime and the City, Hate Crimes Against London’s Jews, and the edited volumes Hate Crime: The Consequences of Hate Crime, and The Hate Debate. He mostly conducts his research in collaboration with, or commissioned by, NGOs and the equalities sector in the UK and internationally. At Lancaster University he teaches courses on criminological perspectives on violence, and hate crime, human rights and the State.

JACK LEVIN, Ph.D. is an Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Criminology and Co-director of the Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict at Northeastern University, where he teaches courses in the sociology of violence and hate. Levin has authored or co-authored more than 30 books, including Why We Hate, Hate Crimes: The Rising Tide of Bigotry and Bloodshed, and The Violence of Hate. Dr Levin was honored by the Massachusetts Council for Advancement and Support of Education as its "Professor of the Year" and by the American Sociological Association for his contributions to the public understanding of sociology. He has also received awards from the Eastern Sociological Society, Association of Clinical and Applied Sociology, and Society for the Study of Social Problems.
