Leadership explained in a way that can be applied

This is an exceptional book for a leader of any type; beginner to senior executive; and also for those that have not yet realised they are leaders. I believe it to be sound training material and have based my company’s leadership development program on this framework, together with that of Verne Harnish’s The Rockefeller Habits, and Jack Daly’s sales methodologies.

I have studied the theory of leadership at work, at university and in my own time over the past 35 years. It is my generalised observation that the more theoretical the teacher or material; then the more likely it is that an inversely proportional relationship exists between what is being taught and the teacher’s experience in positions of leadership. The same can be said about the ability of heavy theoretical texts and they applicability to the workplace.

Cantwell was an exceptional leader in the Australian Army and his presence in a room is one that gives others a feeling of being near a remarkable person. He was always promoted well ahead of his peers and in 2006 was the first Australian to be promoted on the battlefield to Major General since WW2. He is an experienced leader.

He was also a soldier before being an officer and as I recall reading elsewhere, the youngest sergeant in the Australian Army at one time prior to becoming an officer. You could therefore be forgiven for believing this to have a military focus and application; and you would be wrong. After having recently heard Cantwell speak at the book’s launch at the Australian National University it was clear that his focus is on developing leaders in the private and public sectors. While I am sure his framework of leadership is still applicable to a military audience, it was clear that he has transformed his delivery style to that which meets the needs of a non-military audience.

The book is very easy to read, it is not full of heavy concepts and offers clear advice. Its central tenant is that to be a true leader you must be authentic. Anyone that has worked will benefit from this book because you can immediately relate to the five items in each of the five areas within Cantwell’s leadership framework. This is the case because you will have seen them practised well or practised poorly. This is the book’s strength because we can relate to its words; we can learn from it, and then examine the issues in a deeper way at our current workplace by putting them into practice. It also levels an experienced leader and gives you the opportunity to navel gaze back over your leadership experiences and consider Cantwell’s leadership framework against the way you demonstrate leadership today.

I forecast more to come from Cantwell on leadership; perhaps a program of social media, video casts and Cantwell’s presence on the speaking circuit. It is a must read, a quick read, a clear read and very motivational.

A leadership masterclass from a genuine leader

I was keen to read this book after reading the author's previous work "Exit Wounds" which has a string of well-deserved 5-star reviews. This is a different work, a "how to" guide on leadership, based on Cantwell's 40 years as a leader in the army (he rose from private to 20star general) and in post-disaster recovery. It contains dozens of actionable tips and techniques for both established and aspiring leaders. I especially loved the many examples from the real world, of how to lead. It is an easy read, well laid out and accessible. The book has received outstanding reviews from prominent leaders, and I can see why. I wish I'd had this book when I was learning the business of leadership. Highly recommended.

Thoughtful Leadership Principles

I've never met Major General Cantwell, but after reading his book, I hope to. He offers a well thought out leadership philosophy applicable to any aspiring leader. Being a military leader myself, I hope to apply his insights during my remaining days in uniform. He goes beyond 'generalized leadership theories' and gives tangible examples of principles worth thinking about. Well worth the read.

About the Author
Donald E. Knuth is known throughout the world for his pioneering work on algorithms and programming techniques, for his invention of the TEX and METAFONT systems for computer typesetting, and for his prolific and influential writing (26 books, 161 papers). Professor Emeritus of The Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University, he currently devotes full time to the completion of his seminal multivolume series on classical computer science, begun in 1962 when he was a graduate student at California Institute of Technology. Professor Knuth is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the ACM Turing Award, the Medal of Science presented by President Carter, the AMS Steele Prize for expository writing, and, in November, 1996, the prestigious Kyoto Prize for advanced technology. He lives on the Stanford campus with his wife, Jill.

Every Developer Should Read These

Dr. Yale Patt once told me that anybody who reads through these volumes and completes all the exercises will become an incredibly valuable software developer, and thinker in general. After spending a few weeks with these books, I realize that he was correct, although completing all of the exercises may be impossible in any reasonable amount of time.

Do yourself a favor. Buy these books, read through them, and try to complete the exercises. I promise you will become a significantly better programmer, regardless of your current skill level.

Masterpiece of Programming Knowledge

I read this book cover to cover which took me over 3 months, and I was extremely impressed with this collection. Knuth turns computer programming into an art form as the title suggests.

There is a lot of history which Knuth makes interesting by stating which algorithms were remarkable discoveries and which were logical extensions of other algorithms. The analysis is much more in depth than other authors especially with regards to run time performance.

At the end of each section there are tons of problems to solve, and full answers are in the back. I especially liked how each problem has a rating on its difficulty. For example, a problem with a rating 10 is easy, rating 25 might take an hour... up to rating 50 which is an unsolved problem in computer science.

Volume one starts with the first 150 pages being math related to computer science. Then the assembly language is introduced which many of the algorithms are written in. The choice for assembly was made so as to not commit to one specific language's paradigm.

Volume two gets into the heart of the algorithms. A lot of interesting things about floating point calculations, and prime number discovery. My overall understanding of computer science improved a ton here.

Volume three was my personal favorite. Knuth explains searching and sorting very well. The evolution of the "trie" data structure was impressive. At first he shows a way to make a trie in a way I had never seen before. Then he showed another way, and finally he got to the modern way I had seen. With this knowledge, I understood how the trie was discovered, how it was improved, and then improved again. Every other algorithm book just shows the modern trie without explaining how they got there.

Volume four is heavy on math again with a lot about permutations and combinatorics. This was the most difficult of the books I felt but also rewarding.

Knuth's writing is excellent. Each sentence is clear and communicates in a way that makes computer history interesting.

The box set itself is beautiful and the paper is high quality. I wish I could give more than 5 stars for the review.

Beautiful books

Since reviews of the book content can be found elsewhere, I thought I'd review the actual collection that I bought - these four books and the box that they came in.

They are beautiful, the off-white coloured dust jackets make a pleasing change to the other pure white books that I have on my desk, and the box sets the set apart from everything else.

Also, since purchasing this set, the following things have happened.

1) My IQ increased by 1 point as soon as I placed the box on my bookshelf
2) The Women in my IT department increased their rating of me by 1.5. Apparently I'm now an 8 (9 if I take my glasses off) my colleagues report that this is a 0.5 increase in rating over a non-boxed collection of these books.
3) I have found that taking one book out, opening to a random page and inhaling deeply, when combined with a double-shot coffee, will ensure good spirits and coding karma for at least the next 4 hours.

My only complaint about this set is the fact that they are fairly snugly fit in the box. this requires actually tipping the box forward to select a book, you cannot fit your finger over the top of any one book to pull it out. The exaggerated action of doing this, however invokes jealous looks and dreamy eyes from my male and female/gay colleagues respectively so is worth it.

Crossing disciplinary boundaries, the author compares the making of actual gardens to that of the literary pleasances described by Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Ficino. Although the fictional gardens appear "designed" in that their place within literary works is carefully thought through, their actual counterparts are the product of a modus operandi, indebted to horticultural knowledge handed down from one generation to another in a slowly evolving tradition.

He has a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and is a skilled programmer, but his passion for the arts is what drives him. I can't recommend this book enough!

I can't recommend this book enough! The artwork is absolutely stunning and there are so many useful tips that you end up wishing that the last page never arrives. I've been following Carlos for a while and he's by far my favorite artist. Also, the book is filled with tips from other awesome artists, which makes the experience even more delightful.
One thing I found very different from other books is that this is an image-oriented book. Every page has, at least, three drawings!
Love, love, love this book. A must have for illustrators and storytellers.

One of the few books on cartooning that actually delivers usable results.

I buy more books on watercolor, illustrating and cartooning than I should. One reason for this is most books only have a limited amount of insight. Some only deal with one or two styles. This book has the pages jam-packed with ideas and ways to think about adding action to your comics. Although it assumes you have some drawing skills, it does give you wee bit of advice on the basics at the front. The rest of the book is quickly dedicated to motion and movement. It scores bonus points for including tips from several published artists. You can thumb to any page at random and get inspired. Not to many books do that. BUY THE BOOK!

OMG! This book is so easy to understand! Finally I understand Light when it comes to drawing and coloring.This book has everything in it that you need to know in order to liven up your comics. I am a webtoon artist and this book has made my drawing life a whole lot easier. It even has a whole section devoted to story telling, Movement and life, stuff you need to know, how to humanize your characters, and each section has a ton of tips and tricks and useful information. I recommend this book to everyone whether you are creating comics or just need a little more movement in your artwork, Please check this amazing book out! Whoosh i'm out!

Smooth reading

I recently read this book to brush up on comp sci fundamentals and prepare for technical interviews. It's been 20 years since my undergrad years and this book helped so much for me to get up to speed that I felt I should leave a review. I really enjoyed it and I thought the writing was very smooth considering the subject. Usually these books tend to be very dry and boring. I felt that the material was very well organized and the authors chose very good examples and gave information on smaller subjects very carefully. I recommend this book unreservedly.
