Sniper at Leningrad's Seige

This is a very real account of a Red Army sniper's work in the heroic defense of his home city. It includes technical details of sniper deployment and tactics but also a look at the heroism and sorrow of a man trying to protect his family in a city beseiged for years by the Nazis in the Great Patriotic War. It has been said that "a good soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him but because he loves what is behind him." I'm a modest student of the Red Army snipers and a collector of Mosin sniper rifles, and this book, plus Zaitsev's "Notes of a Russian Sniper" are must-reads on the topic. Also, this is a very, very sad book, so don't expect any Rambo stuff...read this and you'll understand why Leningrad earned the title of "Hero City."

Thoroughly Engrossing Tale of the Siege of Leningrad

"Red Sniper on the Eastern Front" is one man's story of life in the front lines from 1941 until 1944, when he was badly wounded and invalided out of the Red Army. The book does not gloss over the horrors of trench warfare and the siege, nor does it dwell on them.
If you are looking for a detailed work describing the tradecraft of a Soviet sniper, this is not the book for you. If, however, you want an unflinching tale of war as experienced by a Soviet sniper, then this book is well worth reading.
(This book will also open the eyes of everyone who has been fed the propaganda that Soviet front-line commanders did not care for the welfare or the suffering of their men.)

A dour tale of war

This is Pilyushin's memoir of his part in World War 2 during the Siege of Leningrad. A monumental 800 day siege and brutal trench fighting, while the Soviet soldiers struggled to set their city free. Hardships of all kinds and intimate enemies often only a few dozen meters away.
Pilyushin's story too is one of interest og great personal tradegy and it is told in a somber manner. He is wounded several times and once very seriously while his wife and two sons suffer the hardships of the Siege of Leningrad, neaar starvation and constant shelling.
So everything is there to make a good story but I confess I didn't like the style in which it is written and it failed to capture me and became a labor to finish.
Which is sad for this is a worthy story, that fails in its telling. It reminds me of an old man telling a story that he hasn't practiced.
