Make sure you get the right volume - this is volume 2

I didn't notice this was volume 2 until it arrived. I needed volume 1 (chapters 1-16).

The workbooks look helpful, though you need to get the solutions manual separately.

Edit March 2017: Almost done with Physics II now, and I have to say, these workbooks are useless. The solutions manual gives solutions for only 1/5 problems, and I don't have time to do extra work anyway. The textbook is good, but unless you have a lot of free time and just love doing extra physics, you don't need the workbook.

may have been a god workbook but defeats the purpose of giving extra practice as no answers available so not really helpful at all if you want to know if your work is correct :(

Decent, but no solution manual.

The practice problems are actually pretty good if you want extra physics practice, but there aren't any solutions to the problems, nor could I find any online. I think it was a waste of money in the end because even though the problems were challenging, what good is it if I get a question wrong and don't know how to solve it correctly? I would recommend the book, but be warned that you won't be able to get the answers unless your professor has solved them or something.

Sonchai Jitpleecheep, the hero of Burdett’s Bangkok-based thrillers, is a unique police detective. A Buddhist as closely attuned to karma as to crime, Sonchai is profoundly aware that the latter is only an expression of the former, and, accordingly, he finds answers in places that logic-hampered Westerners would never know to look. In his third adventure to date, a murdered prostitute proves to be—even more in death than she was in life—a femme fatale of special magnitude. As in previous episodes, the pleasures derive less from Burdett’s baroque plotting (in this case including former Khmer Rouge hired killers, a pornography ring debased even by Bangkok standards, and a death by torture involving elephants) than from the vivid portrait he paints of contemporary Thai life and mores.

John Burdett, a British writer living in Asia, adds another intriguing mystery/noir novel to the genre with Bangkok Haunts. Like its two predecessors, the novel melds Eastern and Western culture while taking readers on a wild ride through Bangkok's seamy underworld, where morality takes on shades of gray. "Imagine a Conrad novel transformed into a video game," notes the Boston Globe, replete with all of the successful clich�s of the genre, including fast-paced action and heart-turning plots. Sonchai becomes deeper and more intelligent with each novel, as do Burdett's portrayals of a city where ambiguity reigns. A less-than-convincing ending and some stock characters bothered a few critics, but overall, Bangkok Haunts is a compelling, worthwhile read.

Five spicy stars

In Bangkok Haunts, we learn that before Sonchai Jitpleecheep married Chanya (a central character in Bangkok Tattoo), he was in love with another of the sex workers employed in his mother's bar, an alluring woman named Damrong. After leaving Jitpleecheep, Damrong ended up starring in a snuff film, her first and last role. Jitpleecheep's investigation of her death leads him to powerful bankers, impoverished villagers, and a Buddhist monk. The investigation is complicated by Damrong's sexually adventurous ghost. (If you haven't read one of these books, this probably sounds like a reason not to, but trust me, it all makes sense in the context of the story.) As Jitpleecheep learns more about Damrong, he realizes that karma will exact a price for the ecstatic days he spent with her, oblivious to her painful past. Eventually he learns more about Damrong, and about himself, than he really wants to know.

Of John Burdett's first three Bangkok novels, Bangkok 8 remains my favorite, but this one is a close second. The plot is less twisty than the first two stories. I appreciate the simplicity because in Bangkok Haunts the story never gets in the way of the characters. And the character of Jitpleecheep is amazing: a complex, burdened man, always conflicted, always battling personal and cultural ghosts, always striving for growth, yet always funny, gracious, endearing, and very human. Some reviewers at this site criticize Burdett's depiction of Buddhism or of the Thai people in these books, but to me the novels are all about Jitpleecheep -- and whether he resembles other half-Thai, half farang Buddhists matters not; he is who he is. Reading about his life and struggles and adventures and fears is inevitably enlightening, amusing, and richly entertaining.

A word of caution: in addition to the usual sex scenes that populate Burdett's Bangkok novels, Bangkok Haunts deals with a certain sexual taboo in a nonjudgmental, even accepting manner. While that approach is true to the novel's theme and to Jitpleecheep's character, it might bother those readers who perceive the failure to condemn such behavior as a sign of moral weakness. Fans of the series, however, are likely to understand the point Jitpleecheep is making about the influence of poverty and horrific parenting upon sexual behavior, and will thus understand the absence of harsh judgment.

Bangkok Haunts blends humor and tragedy into a powerful, compassionate, haunting story. The ending is wild. Five spicy stars flavored with extra hot chili peppers.

Police Procedural - Thai Style

Thailand, poverty stricken and seething with mysticism, is the brilliant setting for this police procedural - Thai style. When mesmerizing prostitute Damrong becomes the star of a well produced snuff film, Detective Sonchai Jitplecheep calls in his farang (westerner) friend - "almost" lover Kimberly Jones - to help him find the killer, and Eastern and Western cultures are brought face to face.

Sonchai moonlights as part owner of a brothel run by his mother, whose frank philosophy has her say, "who we are in the next life is determined by how generous we are in this one, not by what market forces bend us to do." When Damrong worked in the brothel, she seduced Sonchai so thoroughly that he reached the point where his feelings for her switched from objective admiration to the psychosis of possession. She then unceremoniously dropped him. And now, years later, he's married with a child on the way, but the DVD containing the snuff film has been delivered to him and he is on the case. Damrong might be dead, but she's NOT gone. Very soon her ghost begins to visit his dreams, and every night, in his bed beside his sleeping wife, she has her way with him until he wakes, trembling and spent.

Bangkok Lights is all levels below delicious levels. The author's depictions of the activities of the undead are vivid and believable, and the Buddhist concept of Reincarnation is made to feel very real indeed. As the story progresses and each development reveals a bit more of Damrong's story, the reader becomes so immersed in the mysteries he forgets that he doesn't believe in ghosts, demons, or other lifes. I loved this one. Five Stars.

Burdette continues to amaze

I discovered Sonjai with Bangkok 8. Ever since, I have been following his adventures in the right order, with Tattoo, Haunts and now the Godfather of Kathmandu. I can't get enough of Burdette, as his stories are becoming more intimate, his mysticism deeper, and the role of magic more prominent. With every release Burdette's penmanship seems to reach new heights: his playful writing is more and more daring, constantly testing the receptivity of the reader--I'm sure I miss several of his references and metaphors--each sentence yielding unexpected pleasures. This is the real gift of those books: the plots are satisfying, but the sheer fun of the read, the relentless creativity that animates the characters' thoughts, are what I most enjoy. No doubt he's become the established master of the Indochina Black Thriller--he might have invented the genre, actually--but most important, the introduction he provides to the Thai culture and the insights he brings us from the Buddhist cibilization are wonderfully educative.

About the Author
Dr. James B. Kaler is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research area, in which he has published over 100 papers, involves dying stars. He has held Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, has been awarded medals for his work from the University of Liege and the University of Mexico, has written for a variety of magazines, was a consultant for Time-Life Books on their Voyage Through the Universe series, and appears frequently on Illinois television and radio. His books include Stars and their Spectra (Cambridge University Press), Stars (Scientific American Library), Astronomy! (HarperCollins), The Ever-Changing Sky (Cambridge), Astronomy! A Brief Edition (Addison-Wesley), and Cosmic Clouds (Scientific American Library). He has also developed, with Sarah Kennedy, the scientific kit Elements of the Universe. He is a past president of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony.

Observatory backup book. High school senior or College 101 Astronomy course

As an amateur astronomer of 40 years I wanted a backup book for myself and others to use for our astronomy club to be used at our observatory.

Even though this book is dated 1994 most of the information is fine and will not change. You may need a later copy for exoplanet exploration or specific technology after 1994. I got a used copy in good condition for about $1.50 plus shipping and handling. Fine for general Astronomy.

Lots of color pictures. James Kayler uses a sensible method of explaining from the simpler subjects to the more complex. There are elementary and more advanced questions and answers on each subject. The book would make a great textbook for a high school senior or college freshman taking an Astronomy 101 course. Not too difficult in math and most should be able to follow the subjects without too much difficulty.

Parts are...Classical, Physical,Planetary and Stellar Astronomy. Birth and Death In the Galaxy and Galaxies and the Universe. James Kayler did a good job and covered all the important bases. This book should give readers the knowledge and excitement of Astronomy for them to explore the wonders of the Universe more. 4 stars and recommended.

About the Author

Nicolas Collins, an active composer and performer of electronic music, and has worked with John Cage, Alvin Lucier, David Tudor, and many other masters of modern music. Dr. Collins is Professor of Sound at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has led hacking workshops around the world. He has been Visiting Artistic Director of STEIM (Amsterdam) and a DAAD composer-in-residence in Berlin. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of Leonardo Music Journal.

Rediscovers the simple facts of electronic music

Ever since products such as GarageBand took over the low-level tasks of producing electronic music and turned us all into application users, much has been forgotten about making music with low-level electronic components. In the case of younger electronic musicians, this may be an art form they never even knew in the first place. Although there is an advantage is computer musicians speaking a common language through a common application, something fascinating in the realm of experimentation has been largely lost. This book returns to the days of yesteryear with some projects in making your own electronic music with basic devices.

The book starts with some brief information on the tools you'll need plus the author's seven rules for experimentation. Part two is dedicated to listening. He shows you how to use radios and coils to find hidden electronic music, how to use the speaker as a microphone and vice versa, and how to use piezo disks to pick up tiny sounds, among other topics. Part three, on touching, shows you how to transform a portable radio into a synthesizer, change the clock circuit in toys to produce new sounds, and use photocells and pressure pads to "play" the modified toy. Part four, Building, shows the reader how to breadboard up some oscillators along with some controlling circuitry and produce gating, ducking, tremolo and panning effects. Part five, Looking, concerns translating video to audio using commonly found devices. The final section goes into depth on mixing circuits, how to build a good but cheap amplifier, connecting sensors to computers via game controllers, and a section on power supplies.

The book is written such that you should proceed from beginning to end, since the devices in earlier sections are used to assemble the devices in later chapters. By the time you finish you should have entire experimental musical instruments that you have assembled yourself.

Yet if you were looking for a *real* book on "handmade electronic music" which tells you about circuits, opamps, various oscillator circuits, modulation etc, then this book is a real joke.

More than half of the book is full of extremely basic - and usually worthless - stuff, such as "Hacking the Clock" of a toy, which drives it to generate sounds at a higher frequency. It is clear that Mr. Collins understanding of music is a bit different than what most people have in mind.

Only after passing more than half of the book, there was a part about actually building some circuits. And no, it was not a complex, music generating circuit. It was just a bunch of oscillators wired together.

There are nearly no circuits in this book. Concepts such as modulation, empedence, loads, operational amplifiers, signals are non existant in this book.

Last but not least, it was really an expensive book. You can easily add something like 20 dollars more and get a *real* book on audio circuits, which I did after getting a refund on this one.

Go Beyond Circuit Bending

Circuit Benders - if you are ready for something different get of a copy of Collins' informative book. It covers a wide variety of approaches for creating unusual sounds (and sights) in a low tech, user friendly manner. For example, the chapter on making an oscillator uses photos of the breadboard as well as schematics. As someone who finds electronic diagrams intimidating, Collins' approach made construction a snap. It also helped me better understand how to read schematics. Creating visuals with LCDs and by altering video cameras further expand the realms of hacking. The included CD features work by artists and musicians using devices found in the book. What a great idea. Very inspiring. I wish the Ghazala book (which is also great)had a similar CD. Sources for parts, websites and additional information galore make this a must have item.
