About the Author
Wayne C. Booth (1921–2005) was the George M. Pullman Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. His many books include The Rhetoric of Fiction and For the Love of It: Amateuring and Its Rivals, both published by the University of Chicago Press. Gregory G. Colomb (1951–2011) was professor of English at the University of Virginia and the author of Designs on Truth: The Poetics of the Augustan Mock-Epic. Joseph M. Williams (1933–2008) was professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago and the author of Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace. Joseph Bizup is associate professor in the Department of English at Boston University. He is coeditor of the thirteenth edition of the Norton Reader and editor of the eleventh edition of Williams’s Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace. William T. FitzGerald is associate professor in the Department of English at Rutgers University–Camden.

Helpful for all levels!

As a PhD student, I had written dozens and dozens of research papers before reading this book. I wish now that I could redo them. The information presented in this book is clear and thorough. Even on my first skim of the book I have learned valuable skills that will improve my writing!! I only wish my undergrad professors had forced me to read this book previously!!

Quick-witted protagonist Locke is slowly succumbing to poison as his loyal companion, Jean, tries to find someone who can save him. The price of rescue gets the duo involved in running an election campaign in the city-state of Karthain, where the parties are fronts for two factions of terrifyingly powerful mages. The opposition campaign leader is none other than Locke's long-lost love, Sabetha, who knows all of his moves and has a few of her own. A set of flashbacks explores Locke, Jean, and Sabetha's shared past as a theatrical scam goes horribly wrong. Locke and company remain among the most engaging protagonists in fantasy, and Lynch sneaks in some incisive political parody while never overdoing the comedy. *Starred Review* Announced as early as 2008, the long, long, long-awaited sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006) and Red Seas under Red Skies (2007) finally arrives. The story picks up almost immediately after the end of Red Seas. Locke Lamora, professional thief and con artist, has been poisoned (“He was being unknit from the inside; his veins and sinews were coming apart”). He has only a handful of days left, but rescue from certain death comes from a most unexpected source: the Bondsmagi, the powerful sorcerers who haven’t exactly been Locke’s best friends until now. After ridding his body of the poison, they, of all things, offer him a job. They want him to help rig a local election, which doesn’t sound all that tricky, except that someone else is working the other side of the street, and she’s at least as clever and ruthless as Locke: Sabetha Belacoros, Locke’s long-lost love. This rousing adventure expands on themes introduced in the first two books and tells the full history of Locke and Sabetha, whose relationship was tantalizingly sketchy in the first installment. The Bondsmagi, too, are shown here in more detail than ever before, and Lynch has some serious surprises in store for fans of the first two books. It might have taken Lynch a lot longer to publish the book than fans wanted, but it was definitely worth the wait. A landmark publishing event in the sf world. --David Pitt

... Gentleman Bastards - which is to say it's still good, but not as good

Disappointing after the other 2 books in the Gentleman Bastards - which is to say it's still good, but not as good. I think there is a level of intensity of emotion and angst and history between Locke & Sabetha that is never fully realized despite the explanations. How it ends up reading, she's an emotionally unstable bitch and he's forever a lovelorn puppy she's kicking. I am 100% certain this wasn't the intent. But her motives are too mysterious, it makes her actions seem capricious and cruel.

It is easier to get lost in a fantasy when the people still seem real, Locke's awkwardness around her, her flightiness, his undying loyalty - they all push me out of the story and make the characters seem thinner.

While I do not love it, I did like it

Let me begin this by saying I am an avid Scott Lynch fan, and will remain a fan even after this novel. While I do not love it, I did like it. Do not like Sabetha. Do not like. Do not like. I felt as if the love story and Locke's constant brooding and bumbling over her really slowed down the plot and what was important in the present. Skipped over a lot of the interludes this time because I didn't find them to be as interesting as they were in the previous novels. I'll reread them in time, but not now.

I AM eagerly waiting for the next book though. I'm hooked on this series.

Unfortunately this book was another step down from the previous novel, which of course was itself a lesser novel than the first.

That said, it was still highly entertaining and had points of brilliance. The Lies of Locke Lamora is in my top 10 novels of any genre list (albeit I love fantasy the most) and it goes without saying that such quality is hard to live up to. While this book still contained much of the raucous amusing dialogue, twisted plot lines, and devilishly delightful trickery that made the two previous novels wonderful, it seriously lacked the enormous ambiance of dread, the wonderful corporeal settings, and, most notably, the profound emotional weight found in the previous installments. Hope the next is better or I will probably not continue on.

I may not know art - but I know what I like

This book was a disappointment to me personally. I did not like most of the art. There is a lot of nudity and I find most of the illustrations have absolutley nothing to do with the songs. I don't see why "Strawberry Fields" needs to be illustrated by a photo of 2 completely naked children. The lyrics are in small type and seem trivial compared with the graphics. To me - it was more that the lyrics were an afterthought and the art work was most important. Also - there ware a lot of solo work by John Lennon included - but equal attention was not given to the other 3 Beatles for their solo efforts. If you are into freaky 60's art and completely gratuitous nudity - then you will probably like this book. But - it's not for every Beatle fan. Oh - and BTW - the person who wrote that "Two of Us" was about Paul's relationship with John and not about Paul & Linda - read Anthology or "Many Years From Now". That song IS about Paul & Linda.

The Beatles content seems to be about 2%. Just weird pictures that have nothing to do with Beatles lyrics.

The pictures don't seem to have much to do with the Beatles or their songs, or lyrics, at all. This book is a joke. I don't recommend it at all. There are a few interesting pictures in it, but it's a large book and a waste of time and money.

A Mormon's View

As a devout Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints)for 53 years, even a Bishop for 6 of those years, I felt deeply that there was more to life. I was not happy with the "one size fits all" doctrine found in Mormonism or that I was put in a position to constantly judge others based on their behavior. This book more than any other I ever read gave me the deep understanding of the meaning of life, of Christ, and of the great Masters of old. Most religions believe they hold the only path back to God. I decided many years ago that that belief is something to be overcome, not embraced. The MasterPath Divine Science of Light and Sound Vol. 1 offered the first insight as to how all those religions fit in the grand scheme of things, and how to "escape" into a life of true freedom - finally. What an amazing, stunning, liberating book!

"Man Behind the Curtain?"

The reviewer who warns you to beware of the "man behind the curtain" has obviously not read this book. Even if he has read it, he certainly does not understand it. No where in the pages of this book is a single solitary mention of "Garji". The reviewer has not based his remarks on the book, but rather information he heard at a seminar, which he also did not understand. It's okay not to understand something, but one should not criticize what they cannot comprehend. This is one of the most beautiful spiritual books ever written. If you are truly searching ... try this book.

A Brilliant Companion to an International Phenomenon

Piketty further explores inequality with this "prequil" volume. Many of the 1-star Amazon reviews of his earlier volume claimed Piketty was a "Marxist" when, in fact, Piketty is an avowed free-market capitalist (Social Democrat), and reserves very harsh words for Marx in both volumes. Apparently, someone on a far right media outlet told their viewers to "give this communist book a bad review" -- which is why so many one-star reviews occurred in a one-week period of time.

Piketty admits that there is no "single reason" for wealth and income-growth inequality. But he does point to a "primary factor," which is a nation's fiscal and tax policies. As many economists have noted, American wealth and income-growth inequality has been worsening since the enactment of "supply side" tax and fiscal policies in the early 1980s. As Piketty and his researcher's note from FED data, the period 1950 to 1980 exhibited a far healthier socioeconomic balance, both in class-wealth and class-income-growth.

By the mid-70's, the "99%-class" had amassed roughly 75% of all U.S. wealth. But today, the 99%-class owns less than 55% of all U.S. wealth. Where did all that wealth go? It trickled UP into the hands a few ultra-wealthy families and trusts (much of it into dark, tax-free offshore accounts, which Piketty estimates between $30T and $50T). Piketty notes that it's not just a profound shift in class-wealth percentages, but in real dollars, as well. In 1978, the average net worth of families in the bottom fifty per cent was $29,000. in 1989, net worth had fallen to $22,000. Today, the average 50%-class net worth is $11,000 (these figures are adjusted for inflation.) At the very top, of course, things have been very different. In 1989, the average net worth of families in the top 5% was $3.6 million. By 2013, it was $6.8 million.

In 1978, the bottom 50%-class owned 7% of all U.S. wealth (reasonably healthy). Today, the bottom 50%-class owns just 1% of all U.S. wealth (that’s NOT a typo). This is the real tragedy – the slow impoverishing of America as a result of poor fiscal policy planning and adaptation. Some argue that net wealth has moved dramatically upward because of external events beyond our control, such as Chinese manufacturing, automation, etc… Piketty points out that such “economic externalities” should be compensated by healthy fiscal policy. Strong, well-designed fiscal policy adapts to all externalities, and keeps all socioeconomic classes in healthy proportion. But since the enactment of Reaganomics, we have done the opposite, and it is killing our national socioeconomic balance.

I would point out that Reagan's budget director, David Stockman, now admits that supply side theory was “poisonous” for the American middle-class. He now calls it "crony fascism" and warns that we are headed for a socioeconomic breakdown if we continue on current trend. We're bankrupting our middle class, and at the core of this corruption is a literal handful of ultra-wealthy interests in control of government fiscal policy lawmaking, via SuperPAC cronyism, K Street revolving doors, Citizen United corruptions (money as speech), and campaign financing laws. Piketty reminds us that gross inequality is not a partisan issue. It is simply a small cadre of ultra-concentrated power and greed against the common good.

Piketty notes that the USA is not alone in its growing economic imbalance. Nations like Switzerland have also become greatly imbalanced, due to similar supply-side fiscal policies. He notes that, once one country starts down the supply-side path, other nations tend to follow, otherwise they risk losing their ultra-wealthy citizens to countries whose "high-earner" tax rates are significantly lower. Piketty calls this “tax competition.”

Piketty, as a free-market capitalist, agrees that the top 1% class requires a disproportionate amount of wealth to capitalize new businesses, assure market liquidity, and so forth. Piketty, along with most other progressive economists, peg a “healthy ratio” of 1% to 99% wealth at around 15%. It’s noted that conservative economists would put that ratio closer to 25%, maybe 30%. The problem is that our 1% class now owns 45% of all U.S. wealth, and climbing year over year, while our 0.1%-class is now paying increasingly regressive tax rates (while everyone else pays progressively). It’s noted that we’re now at the same level of socioeconomic inequality last seen in 1928, and trending towards 1933 levels, brought about largely by similar "Harding-Coolidge" supply-side tax and fiscal policies we tried in the Roaring 20s.

He points to a number of alternative fiscal solutions, including wealth tax, etc.., but admits that going back to a 1950-1980-style progressive policy will be difficult (tax competition, etc.). However, if we don’t return to a fair fiscal and tax system that better balances ALL classes, we will continue to cripple the engine that drives GDP growth, which is our broad middle-class. So he leaves us with a choice, and it is up to those people who understand the issues to drive policy change, or face the eventual social, national, and international consequences.

Just read Capital, the research here is outdated

I'm not against Piketty or this subject, which I think is well worthy of more research and discussion; however, the publication date is a bait and switch. The 2nd sentence of the introduction is a a warning flag: "It should be noted that the overall structure has not changed since 1997 and essentially reflects the state of knowledge and data available at that time. As a result the book does not fully take into account.." (p.5)

Capital is absolutely terrific; I highly recommend getting that book. Far more extensive and currently relevant.
