About the Author

Howard Garfinkel and Will Klein cofounded Five-Star Basketball camp in 1966. More than 290 campers have gone on to play at least one game in the NBA, and Five-Star's alumni make a distinguished list of Who's Who in basketball. Inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in March 2003, Garfinkel and Klein offer clinics in more than twenty-five cities nationwide. They live in New York City.

A good coaching tool

I have used this book for two seasons now and it does offer some good drills. I am able to adapt the lessons to the right age group as ours is a bit young for some of the drills. I like how the book separates drills by aspects of the game, for example there is a defense section, etc. It is not my favorite coaching book but it is useful and I do recommend it.

Good resource for adding diversity to your basketball practice sessions and for making improvements in specific areas within your team. Drills are well-explained and the book is logically organized so as to allow the reader to quickly locate drills for their area of interest (post play, guard play, team offense, team defense, conditioning, etc.) Great for practice planning.

About the Author
Laurence Kimmel (1971) is a French architect and holds a PhD in aesthetics from the University Paris X Nanterre. She published the book "Architecture as landscape - Alvaro Siza" in 2010 (ed. Petra). She is now a teacher and researcher at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture de Paris la Villette. Anke Tiggemann (1975) studied Interior Design in Detmold, Germany. After her degree in 2004, she worked as Research and Teaching Assistant at Hochschule Ostwestfalen- Lippe for CAD / Computer-Aided Design. Currently she lives in Berlin and works as an interior designer and author. Bruno Santa Cecilia (1977) is a Brazilian architect with degrees from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He is professor in the undergraduate programme of UFMG and FUMEC schools of architecture, and published the book "Eolo Maia: complexidade e contradicao na arquitetura brasileira" in 2006 (ed. UFMG). Bruno is also a founding partner of the architecture practice Arquitetos Associados and a founding editor of MDC - Architecture Magazine.

About the Author

Carlos E. Otero, PhD, is assistant professor in the College of Technology and Innovation at the University of South Florida (USF). Prior to joining USF, Dr. Otero worked as assistant professor of software engineering in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Virginia, College at Wise, where he created the software engineering design course for Virginia’s first and (at the time of writing) only EAC/ABET-accredited BS in software engineering.

Prior to his academic career, Dr. Otero spent 11 years in the private industry, where he worked as design and development engineer in a wide variety of military computer systems, including satellite communications systems, command and control systems, wireless security systems, and unmanned aerial vehicle systems. Currently, he continues to consult with industry in the areas of requirements engineering, software systems analysis, design and development, quality assurance, and systems engineering.

Dr. Otero received his BS in computer science, MS in software engineering, MS in systems engineering, and PhD in computer engineering from Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. He has published over 35 technical publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences proceedings. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an active professional member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and a member of several journal editorial boards in technology and engineering.

Badly communicated content, obfuscating writing style

Let me preface my complaints about this book by saying that I'm a university senior who on average reads between 10,000 to 40,000 words of fairly dense, dry and abstract computer science material per day. This estimate is independent of the news, blogs, and internet content I also read every day. I devour text and am quite good at processing, internalizing, and retaining the information contained in it.

The writing style of this book badly obfuscates the topic unless you already know the material. Many of the author's term definitions use the term as part of the definition. In other cases, explanations of concepts are hand-waved away with out-of-context jargon. For instance:

"Whereas generalization allows classes to inherit a parent's class interface and behavior, realization allows classes to inherit the interface."

This is a sentence in which I understand the meaning of each individual word quite well. However it's strung together in a way that doesn't explain any functional distinction between the term "generalization" and "realization". Unfortunately, no further explanation follows this sentence. It's very frustrating to have to read this book with a Google tab open, searching for the actual definitions or examples of these non-intuitive concepts. I've read more IBM InfoCenter Software Architecture online documentation than I ever thought I would as a result of trying to work through the Otero book. The review questions are not fully answerable without significant outside research. I don't believe this was the author's intention or a clever ploy to encourage the reader to seek supplementary material; it seems more a symptom of lazy writing.

An expert veteran of software design will probably not notice these problems with the writing style, but to those trying to learn the material from the ground up in absence of help or perhaps an explanation by the author himself will find that this book hides a lot of information in its attempt to explain.

It feels like lazy academic writing aimed at other academics who will casually skim its contents it in order to congratulate the author on getting a book published and used in universities.

Practical approach to software engineering

I am currently taking a course in Software Engineering. The recommended textbook for that class lacks many of the useful portions of this book. I wish this book was required for that class. It goes in depth into UML diagrams and the importance of design patterns, among other topics, that are not covered by my course's textbook. It takes a very practical approach to design instead of just mentioning concepts and theory. The concepts explained in the book are consistent with the IEEE definitions and, most of the time, snippets from those papers appear in the book.

Effective Software Design Book

I am currently using this book in my software design course. As industry practitioner, I can tell you that the material covered in this book is very practical and useful. It is evident that the author has spent time in industry. The concept of patterns is usually presented in a dry manner. This books uses examples that helps as much as possible to understand the material. For example, the presentation of the Composite patterns as a message builder in chapter 7 is something I've used after I learned from the book. The book is not without flaws... it could expand more on all of the topics, however, it does compiles together numerous important topics in architecture, detailed design, management, HCI, etc. that each could be a book by itself. Overall, when compared with other irrelevant CS books, this ones is by far more usable in practice. I'll give it 4 stars because it could be improved.

I give it two stars because it was free on Amazon Prime. Other than that there's nothing here but broad generalizations. He also makes errors in describing certain topics. For example, it's not as if "risk" didn't have a well defined definition within financial theory. The authors definition of risk, however, is not even close.

Not sure what to think of it...

I have to say, the author has a very pleasant writing style and it makes sense since it seems like he is an accomplished author in religious books.. but this book contains mostly blanket statements. I have a couple of pages left.. maybe I'll revisit this review later. But for now, I give it 3 stars...because it was free.

An important work

Salmon's book was a pivotal study of classical Italy, as it focused not on the Romans, but on one of the separate ethnic groups to occupy the penninsula: the Samnites. The Samnites were Oscan speaking pastoralists who occupied the highlands of the Appinnine Mountains, and proved to be the most pugnacious opponents of Rome. Salmon devotes the first half of the book to a discussion of Samnite language, culture and society, and the second half to a detailed account of the Samnite Wars. He also discusses the Samnite role in the Social and Sullan wars. An important text to a student of the Roman Republic.

The man she called Tender Spirit, whom she came to know by his true name, Kiyiya, had taken her hoping she could bring happiness to his mother, Helaku. With Kiyiya's sister having been lost to death, he wanted Beth to help lessen that loss, or at least this is what Beth was led to believe.

But for Beth, seeing Kiyiya as a brother was never truly an option. She knew when she first looked into his black eyes that she would never be the same.

Through writing, she has found that she not only feels better about herself, she also has a great sense of satisfaction knowing that she has created something that someone else can enjoy.
For this author, romance is a fundamental component in what she enjoys writing. Whether it is the Native American captive tale or a historical novel set on the rolling, misty moors in 18th century England, she loves sharing the world she has created with others.

T.M. Hobbs has had the good fortune of having several of her short stories and novels published. She has worked with Books To Go Now and Gypsy Shadow Publishing, to name a few.

Intriging

Soyala was another interesting Indian novel. I enjoy any Indian book I can find to read, and the different authors are all so very talented. I enjoy reading and learning about the Indian way ,s. I have read many different stories and I never read one I find,t love. Thank you .

Sweet story

This is a sweet story that doesn't have any violence, or bloody murder...what a relief! It also includes tolerance of people with different colored skin. Beth accepts her situation with a calmness that is almost unbelievable. Part of me believed it was the time she lived in; part thought her parentless situation and the reason she was brought to the camp (to be a daughter to someone who lost one) helped her accept her new family more readily. Their simple acceptance of her was amazing, considering what white men have done to Native Americans.

This was just a refreshing, romantic book-I won't rehash the plot, since the blurb already does a good job. My only complaint is that, like every other Kindle book I've read, contains errors. My mother was a college English professor and I monitored in English. It bothers me when I see elementary grammatical errors detract from such a lovely story!
