About the Author
David Jett Pittenger received his B.A. in Psychology from the College of Wooster, his Master's of Science from Texas A & M University, and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Georgia. He is currently an Associate Professor and Chair in the department of Psychology at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. In addition to teaching courses in statistics and research design, David teaches courses in physiological psychology, psychometrics, learning and behavior, and cognitive psychology. David has many interests in psychology and has written articles on the partial reinforcement extinction effect, the ethical responsibilities of psychologists, the validity of personality inventories, and the teaching of psychology. David has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career, including the David A. Leach Award for Outstanding Student in Experimental Psychology at the College of Wooster, the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award at the University of Georgia, and the McCoy Professor of Psychology-Award for Teaching Excellence at Marietta College. A unique introductory book in statistics. The hallmark of this book is nodoubt the clarity of detailed explanations of fundamental statistical concepts. A lot of invaluable material and explanantions here not to be found in other textbooks on statistics!
Highlights that spring to my mind are the excellent treatments of averages, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing. A very important topic (usually missing in most textbooks) is the strength of evidence in hypothesis and significiance testing and is treated very nicely in various parts of the books. This book should not be missed by beginners (and probably experts) in the field.

Great for those trying to get the basic understanding of behavioral statistics. The wording is very plain and easy to understand, yet they also don't ramble. The index works well, and the appendices are highly useful.

I am using this book for an online graduate statistics course, so there is little direction from a formal instructor. All of my information so far is from this book. It is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who is beginning the journey into statistics...very helpful

A Must Read for Serious Educators!

That Laura Fleming isn't better known as an innovator in education is about to change! Fleming's recently released "Worlds of Making" is perhaps one of the best and most refreshingly readable books that can literally transform the way we teach our students. Fleming is clearly a practiced writer with an eye for presenting new ideas in short narratives to nourish critical thinking. What makes this book sing are the revolutionary ideas that are so easy to implement.

This far-sighted educator's greatest asset is she practices what she preaches and can give a first-hand account of the "Maker Movement's" classroom success. Anyone who cares about igniting the imagination of today's students needs to read this book!

On my list of MUST-READ MakerEd books

Laura's work at New Milford High School was a huge inspiration for me as I created my school's library Makerspace. Her book is a fantastic look at the process she went through in creating her space. She gives a thorough, well-researched look at the relevance of the Maker Movement in education, how it ties into education standards, and how it can enhance learning. She offers plenty of practical advice on the planning process of creating a Makerspace, how to build a Maker culture in your school, and offering your students opportunities to share their work. This is an excellent book and well worth purchasing for anyone interested in Makerspaces and education trends.

This book is essentially a prayer book containing several different prayer programmes of which one is that of 'Jehu Prayers' It is recommended for those who are already accustomed to spiritual warfare praying at the highest level. The nature of King Jehu, a former army commander to drive furiously and kill mercilessly was used by God to eliminate the house of King Ahab who propagated Baal worship in the land. These prayers reflect that radical nature required to break the occult power of their witchcraft, and are accurately bible based and cover all aspects of the scenes of elimination. Personally, I would prefer a less heavy book with the contents giving page numbers, similar to Prayer Rain or Prayer Passport. However the prayers are powerful with unfolding spiritual revelation imparted to the author in more recent times that would touch deep areas in deliverance ministry. It is extremely relevant and highly recommended for today.

Dry rendering of a great human story

The Bengal Renaissance was a great flowering of vivid and socially insightful humanism, which occurred mostly in Calcutta following governor William Hastings' completion of the New Fort William in 1773. Over the next 100 years, Calcutta (and Bengal) became a center of art, literature, philosophy and science that firmly established it as India's cultural (as well as political) capital.

In many ways, this story mirrors a similar one written in St. Petersburg, Russia during the same period. Yet, for some reason, the great Russian cultural awakening of the 18th and 19th centuries is well known to us, but the equally important Bengali development is not.

Much of this problem is due to the existing historical literature dedicated to the two topics. The Russian cultural renaissance, brought about by the cultural mingling of European and Russian peoples in St. Petersburg, is most often told as a great human story, a story of people trying to reconcile a "backward" past with an inevitably modern future. The Russian story is mostly told about the people, and the great works of human expression they produced.

An analagous social movement occurred in Bengal - primarily in Calcutta - driven by the juxtaposition of English institutions and sensibilities onto an intellectually restless local population. The problem is, it's rarely told that way. More often than not, Indian historians reduce the Bengal Renaissance down to the founding of Anglo-Indian academic institutions and the accomplishments of their respective Western-educated alumni, sometimes listed almost like a CV.

This book is no exception. Dr. Dasgupta does not deviate from this formula. He presents us with the minutae of the founding and function of this college and that college, but fails substantially in presenting this intellectual movement in broader humanistic, political and economic contexts. So, I know where and what all the Tagores studied in Calcutta, but I can't tell you, after reading this book, why it's important to human society. The author goes so far as to suggest that each of the great thinkers in Bengal who contributed to the Renaissance was simply a product of his or her formal education (re: pg. 203). I would suggest that it's rather more than that. The childhood biographies are nice, but we know where they all lead; to the college in Calcutta.

So, if you like your cultural history told essentially as the history of academic institutions and societies, you may like this book.

The author's writing style is clear enough, but he makes a dry thesis even drier by writing most of the narrative in a stilted, Victorian passive voice. Institutions "were founded" and literature "was written," etc... Well, we know that much. The important part is WHO did all this founding and writing, and WHY does it matter.

In summary, this book presents a great human story told in a most inanimate, unengaging way. There are better books on this subject. I recommend the various history monographs by Lakshmi Subramanian and Nitish Sengupta.

These awakening movements subsequently helped in spreading of Swadeshi ideas and freedom struggles across the sub-continent. It is really engaging while reading this book.

A Great Book for Adults Too!

Yes, this is officially a "kids' book" (Ages 9 -14, I believe). However, I, an adult, read it and found it educating and very interesting. I got this book during a visit to James Madison's estate Montpelier. I thought I'd read it first, before getting into the more massive (and more intellectual) biography by Dr. Ketcham. If you're new to James Madison, I'd recommend doing that.
In any case, Jean Fritz' book is an excellent choice for adults as well as children.

Fun for Parents and Children Alike

This has become our favorite read-aloud no pictures story with my toddler. She gets the benefit of hearing spoken language about a subject she likes, and I get to learn something new every time we read it.
I would reccomend this book for older primary, even lower-level High School students. The story is enlightening, and inspiring for all Americans, young and old.

Worthy Introduction to this Founding Father

Jean Fritz has written a great book for both kids and adults, full of interesting facts about the man, his life, his wives (Dolly was his second), and his remarkable presidency. Throughout the book, the reader gets a real sense for how James Madison thought and felt about political issues, and how he overcame the challenges of being small in stature and small of voice to be one of our great presidents. Definitely worth a read to better understand this great man who lived in extraordinary times.

the best toddler book ever!

I strongly recommend this delightful book for any small child- my daughter had it memorized by the time she was 3 because of the lyrical quality of the words. The illustrations are delightful and compelling for children and adults alike. My alltime favorite children's book, without doubt.

Be prepared to read this book over and over!

My 17 month old daughter LOVES this book! She enjoys the sing-song, repetitive quality to the content and the pictures are lovely. I highly recommend this book to all toddlers. Be forwarned, you may end up reading this book over and over again, but it's worth it.
