Please Don't Laugh - Nearly Life-changing!

I was a too-serious biochemistry pre-med student in 1980 when a dull professor with a dull-sounding class (Computer Modeling of Biological Systems) made me read this book. The writing style is so dry and calculated you can almost hear the language creak and the subject is at the same time simple but difficult to grasp - and no, that's not a contradiction in terms, trust me. But a chapter or two into this book the scales fell from my eyes. I had the true-believer's reaction of, "why doesn't everyone know this!? Why isn't this truth shouted from the rooftops!?" The truth in the book comes mainly from Alan Turing's discoveries in machine theory, a field he basically invented. But the author's achievement is to set forth these ideas, and many others developed later through his work and that of others, in clear, concise words - no mean feat with these subtle but extremely powerful concepts. Previous reviewer David C. Hay hit the nail on the head with his comment that "the insights into the true nature of the way things work are as significant as those of Newton or Einstein". Overstatement? If you are reading this review on a computer (yes, you are), you can thank the concepts in this book - they are that fundamental to the development of computers. As I say, the insights are mostly Turing's, but Ashby lays them out in a way that the dedicated reader of moderate intelligence (like myself, for example: I'm no Alan Turing!) can grasp without too much effort. The book's approach might have been softened to include some historical perspective or more concrete examples, but the author chose to refine his message to a distilled essence as clear and powerful as lightning. While almost all my biochemistry textbooks have become outdated and discarded through new developments in that science this slim volume still sits on my bookshelf - I can see it right now. A 40-year-old book as fresh as the day it was written! Read it at your peril: being exposed to completely novel ideas may change your thinking - or even your life!

In a very clear, concise manner, Ashby explains the laws of nature that control the way systems work -- all systems, whether they be organisms, corporations, or governments. His insights into the true nature of the way things work are as significant as those of Newton or Einstein.

Since its creation as a new field of science, Systems thinking has influenced most other areas, including the fields I'm active in myself, such as psychology and social sciences.
This out-of-print book is considered so important by the people of the Principia Cybernetica Project that they want this book to reach as an wide audience as possible. As their website indicates: "W. Ross Ashby is one of the founding fathers of both cybernetics and systems theory. He developed such fundamental ideas as the homeostat, the law of requisite variety, the principle of self-organization, and the principle of regulatory models."
Of course, nothing goes above getting your hand on a *real* copy of this book, but the next best solution is getting the free e-book version which the Principia Cybernetica Project published on their web site with the agreement of the Ashby estate (the copyright holders). Just search for Principia Cybernetica on the web, and surf from there...

About the Author
Karl W. Aranjo is a professional guitarist and guitar instructor based in Southern California. His lifelong guitar studies have included teachers such as Tony Mottolla, Ted Greene & the late William G. Leavitt, author of the Berklee method. Karl is a graduate of Boston's Berklee College of Music and the leader of a busy performing band, Karl Aranjo's jazz attack. When not teaching, learning, performing, writing or recording, Karl enjoys the company of his lovely wife Karen and their small unruly terrier, Roxanne.

Scales, Scales, and more Scales...

This book is very well written from the perspective of a teacher and student in mind. The diagrams initially look simplistic and you might be thinking that this book is not for you, but once you start getting into the material, you will notice that it follows a logical and well developed path to mastering scales.

The theory is kept to a minimum, but informative enough to answer obvious questions relating to the scales being used. Unlike many other books of this type, it keeps your interest longer than other scale books which means you are likely to continue using it whilst the other similar books are collecting dust in your bookcase. I especially liked the use of the linking system so that you can progress to playing around the fretboard. (and transpose to any key) Also the use of the CAGED system to associate the scales to chords is well presented. Another well implemented feature of this book is the use of a key symbol (which denotes important information that you must learn, in order to develop your musical knowledge and literacy). A very thorough modern technique.

If you are concerned about the authors credentials, he was educated by William Leavitt, who probably wrote the most quintessential guitar method every written, and an Alumni from the Berklee College of Music, this book takes those methods and organises them in a more digestible manner. The use of diagrams means there is less time reading and more time playing, whilst learning to play the guitar.

The only criticism is that in this modern day and age of CD/DVD, there are no backing tracks for the exercises in the book and the scales are not played as examples, so that you can hear the notes as well as trying to play along with them in time.

Eureka! I found it!

I've been playing guitar since the 70's, before "TAB", before there was a "CAGED" system as such, nearly all music books available were the "Easy Play-along" kind which never really taught you the song as written & performed.

Because I predominately played solo, I never took the time to learn scales, modes, and arpeggios in depth; I learned what I needed to get by, and that was it. Now, I want to learn the business of Lead Guitar, and of all the books I've perused, this is the only one I've found that was written in any easy to assimilate and perform style. The print size and layout is great for those of us "Old Guys" who are now "optically challenged".
The layout and production style of it reminds me of some really helpful books I've had, like "The Zen of VW Repair" which really brings it all down to earth, and makes things understandable.

After being stuck for so many years, I now feel I can get this stuff, and move-on to the next level in my playing.

Highly recommended to players of ALL levels and ages.

About the Author

Stephen Browne (UK) is Director of The Future of the UN Development System (FUNDS) Project and Fellow of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He worked for more than 30 years in different organizations of the UN development system. He was UN resident coordinator in Rwanda and Ukraine and focal point in UNDP, New York, for poverty and social policy. His last UN job was as deputy head of the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Geneva, the city where he now resides. He has written extensively on development and aid. His books include The International Trade Centre: Promoting Export Development in the current Routledge series; Aid and Influence: Do Donors Help or Hinder? (London: Earthscan, 2006); Beyond Aid: From Patronage to Partnership (London: Ashgate, 1999); and Foreign Aid in Practice (London: Pinter, 1990).

Lane Smith is author and illustrator of the national bestsellers It's a Book, John, Paul, George & Ben, and Madam President, as well as the Caldecott Honor book Grandpa Green. He has illustrated books by Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, Jack Prelutsky, Florence Parry Heide, and Jon Scieszka, including The Stinky Cheese Man, for which he received a Caldecott Honor award. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, book designer Molly Leach.

Heartwarming and educational.

What a great book to have come out in the midst of all the Lincoln fervor from the films and books that are out now for adults. I was worried that this book would be too cluttered with text, but it actually has a very charming story in it.

It starts by alluding to the Lincoln Bedroom ghost story. Then a little girl goes on a tour of the White House (lucky kid!) and sees ghostly Abe looking sad. She finds out he hasn't left the White House in a very long time. So they go on a tour of the United States. She shows him how things have changed, mostly for the better, and are still changing-- to keep getting better.

It ends with Lincoln feeling much better about the state of the country. It is surprisingly heartwarming, the illustrations, while muted in color are effective and expressive.

I really enjoyed this book. It would be great to read to early elementary schoolers. Say from 1st to 3rd grade.

I had hoped for a history lesson hidden inside a fun tale ala John

We have been huge fans of Lane's other books, but this one fell very short for us. I had hoped for a history lesson hidden inside a fun tale ala John, Paul, George, and Ben. What I got was VERY light on facts, and very heavy on pretension. Sadly, this book didn't keep the attention of any of my 7 kids (ages 8 months to 12 years) who will ALL sit and enjoy Smith's other books. Save your money and skip this one.

It's A Dream!

An excellent way to introduce the re-construction period after the Civil War. Use the book trailer along with the book and your students will love it and want to read and see the trailer over and over.
