Almost great for self study.

This book is required for a language class I take. What I like about it, is it's easy to use and it's easy to access the audio online. You don't need an account or cd's or what not. Since Korean is pretty much a hard language to find in most Southern California community colleges, Cal States, and Universities, I know nothing of other Korean workbooks to compare this too. The color coding system for all the levels also make it very easy to know which book you need to purchase when starting and when continuing with your Korean education. The pages are prefforated for those who would like something like that or are required to remove pages to turn in for credit.

Here's why I gave the product only 3 stars. I noticed that there is no answer key. There is one in the back nor is there one available online. This makes it very difficult to go back and see if you're wrong or not (as asking your Korean-speaking friend or teacher can be impracticle sometimes especially when it comes to writing what you think you hear). My teacher posted answer keys she said the company gave her for educational purposes but many of those answer keys contained the wrong assignments as well as answers leaving a large percentage of it useless for many chapters. Because the companhy has YET to produce an answer key the majority of their students can use for studying purposes my teacher was also forced to make her own answer key for her advanced classes. Supposedly the company has been saying they'd produce an answer key for almost over a year now.

Except for that one huge issue, this work book is a great companion to the text book and the ease of access to the audio files online makes it still very much worth it's purchase in my opinion. I do all the assignments in the workbook to thoroughly prepare me for the lesson tests I have and I feel confident in my knowledge of the material and my test scores reflect that. This book is relatively sturdy for a paperback.

Very good book

I'm new to this language all together. I'm really into learning korean, I watch so many K-Dramas and listen to K-pop. So it was really hard for me to decide what kind of textbooks i should get. After reading so many reviews, i had ended up getting this textbook series. I have to say that i have learned alot in the first book, and i'm ready to for the second. In many reviews people seem to complain alot about the audio not being mp3 format, or the $195 aduio cds that can be purchased. Well i was able to get the audio on my ipod, so im able to listen to the audio were every i go. (Macbook Pro, it was easy using my laptop) Advice to people who are self-study, this is a must have book. The lesson aren't "Fast" they can become like that if you don't take your time to study the vocab.

I haven't used this yet, I got it for KOR 102 but dropped the class before it started. I plan on taking it in the Fall, though!

I used the Beginning 1 workbook, and it was great! It's really easy, but not too easy. I was reluctant to write in it at first (I wanted to be able to sell it after the class ended). The only drawback about this workbook: the Klear textbook website does not have the answers, so you have to ask a Professor or someone who speaks Korean to check it for you :/

Should Have Been Better

I really, really wanted this to be a great read. The storyline seemed to be a good one, the idea seemed like it would make a great story. But somewhere along the way, it just never lived up to that potential. Honestly, I thought this was going to be a good, entertaining story, but it just plodded along - never quite making it out of the "okay" rating pile.

But just so you know, the novel and the writing was good enough to keep me reading all the way to the end. I'm not sorry that I read it, but when I finally ended the story, I couldn't help but think back on all of the ways the story could have been good, perhaps great. Just didn't make it.

A Celebration of the Spirit

I bought this book because I wanted to see how an author could realistically tell the story of a pregnant woman who is abandoned in a WalMart store and what happens to her after such a scary, disheartening event. I didn't think it could be done. I was wrong. Novalee Nation has absolutely nothing going for her when she is abandoned by the father of her baby while she's inside WalMart buying shoes to replace the ones that fell through the floor boards of the car she and her boyfriend were travelling in while she was napping. With a little luck and plenty of determination, Novalee not only gets through this experience, but she finds out just what she's made of in the process. She has no reason to expect anything but hard knocks considering how lightly those who should be closest to her play with and abuse her affection. But she has a way of reducing the most complicated circumstances to their simplest elements and works out a way not only to survive but find new people who are worthy of her love and respect. In depending on the kindess of strangers, she makes friends with a varied assortment of quirky characters who add to the charm of this book. The thing about this book is not only its heartwarming message about love, friendship, loyalty, and truth. It's that Billie Letts has made it all realistic and honest so that the message stays with you after the story is finished. Novalee Nation is a tribute to those who believe that God helps those who help themselves.

Billie Letts is an American treasure. She writes about people of the Midwest and what she writes is true to life. Where the Heart is is my favorite of her books. It was a fantastic first book from a woman who only wrote 4 before she passed away. Read Where the Heart is!

Better than other guidebooks!

SUCH a good guidebook! I had checked out 3 other guides from the library, and in my frustration, I bought this one and found that it was far and above easier to use, prettier to look at, and overall, more helpful that the other books I'd checked out (which include Frommers & Moon). Our trip planning jumped up a few notches on the easy scale after buying this book.

Calligraphy, in some way, for Everyone

In expectations I cheated a bit since I had taken the book out of our local library first. Then having seen what was in it I had to add it to my library. While there are plenty of how-to demos this book has so much more. Besides the history of calligraphy there's a tremendous amount on application whether you're doing your own manuscript with drop-down ornamental caps to use of calligraphy in the modern world.
If you're interested at all in "fancy" writing or looking for a way to emboss your notebook with gold leaf, this book is for you. As with many books that cover this broad a range of application there will be sections that may not interest you. But overall you'll be very pleased with your purchase of this book. I certainly am.

Great at what it does

First, let me make it clear that I love this book! It is primarily a reference, with basic step-by-step directions and tons of photos for a wide variety of techniques and alphabets.
Though the first section begins with "Basic Penmanship," I'm not sure I would not recommend it as a first book. However, I think it would make a great second book. It includes enough detail to allow you to develop a basic working knowledge of just about any of the techniques or alphabets, expanding your skills. Once you have identified a particular area of interest, I would recommend pursuing additional information. (This is not an in-depth work-just an overview!)
The second section is a sort of gallery, with photos of a wide variety of professional work and a short discussion of the artist's intentions or process. The work depicted is often breath taking, and makes ME jealous! I have returned to this book time and time again for inspiration.

A Fantastic Resource!

I teach an adult ESL class and have discovered that this book is a resource I really cannot do without! In combination with the teacher's manual, it has become a valuable resource for teaching new vocabulary to my students. When I first started using it in my lessons, the students skimmed through it and were very impressed with the variety of pictures arranged by themes. After using it at home, they have ALL told me that it is a wonderful book and are so thankful they have it!

Great picture dictionary

What makes this dictionary so great is that it is not in alphabetical order and it is based on themes. For example, there is a classroom theme on a page and all of the words that have to do with what is in a classroom. Also, I like the fact that their are numbers next to the object and then all of the words in Spanish and English are at the bottom half of the page. This allows you to cover up all of the words and quiz yourself.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to build their vocabulary.

Everything this poet touches upon is volatile-the poet himself, the people and world around him, ideas and mythologies, the ghosts of memory and the dreams of possible futures, all seem to burst into fragments. Mark Turcotte uses poetry to gather up the pieces-the shards of joy and grief, peace and doubt, strength and temptation, questions and answers-as he tries to define and rediscover what is lost when everyday life becomes explosive.

The first part of the book is a series of lyrical poems that all begin with the phrase "Back when I used to be Indian," a self-contradictory concept that strikes at the heart of Turcotte's identity. Accompanied by memories and ghosts of the past from the Native American world, he uses his marvelous gift of metaphor to take us from "the rez" through his experiences of mainstream American life. His absent father and his own experience of fatherhood are the subjects of a second group of poems, leading him to explore the legacy that burdened his father and, in turn, the different kind of legacy that now burdens him. In a third and final group, Turcotte's imagination reaches again into the many flames of his experience, leading toward the title poem, where even the most dangerous of fires become a guiding light. His words embody a history and a linguistic power that make his poems flash with the energy of a startling vision and a dark hope.

About the Author
Mark Turcotte (b. 1958) lived his early years on North Dakota's Turtle Mountain Reservation and grew up in and around Lansing, Michigan. He now lives and works in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. Turcotte was the recipient of the First Annual Gwendolyn Brooks Open-Mic Award. He was a Pushcart Prize nominee in 1998 and in 2000, and he received a Lannan Foundation Literary Completion Grant in 2001. His work has appeared in Prairie Schooner, Ploughshares, and Poetry, among other publications, and in 1998 he published a revised edition of his first book, The Feathered Heart (Michigan State University Press). A selection of his poems will soon appear in a bilingual French-English edition entitled La Chant de la Route (La Vague Verte, Paris).�

Mark Turcotte read his poetry at College of DuPage last month as part of the Writers Read series and also participated in a panel discussion on the theme “Identity Matters.” A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, Turcotte writes about his struggle to find his own identity caught between cultures. His “The Back When Poems” reflect life on the reservation and the meaning of Indian-ness, based on a comment by another who later referred to the time as “back when you used to be Indian.” Turcotte creates scenes with vivid imagery and figurative language, describing the sound of “thunder from out of the throat of the night” when “the sheets beneath me are soaked with memory.”
A second group of poems called “Road Noise” explore his feelings regarding the Indian father he missed as a child and whom he never really knew until he attended the man’s funeral. He tries to imagine “the story of your skin [that]echoes along the steel-ice rails that run like black-blood veins over the heart of America” and tries to understand “Men like you, who as boys, grieved for the thunder of the herds, dreamed of the thunder of the ponies and their hooves, that howling.”
The third group of poems also attempts to reconcile identity with his experience as an Indian, as a child, a man, a husband, and a father. “No Pie” poignantly recalls the prejudice the young mixed-blood Turcotte experienced. The collection ends with “Exploding Chippewas”, in which the ghosts of his ancestors appear in various forms before they explode, “burn to a flash.” They find him in different places in his life: his mother’s living room, a shabby motel room, a West Texas honky-tonk. He knows the voice of the first ghost “is the sound of sunlight dissolving, wings unfolding…” One ghost appears as “vapor spinning out of the ceiling fan”, others as steam, mist, light. Another ghost appears as heat, taking “the shape of the northern horizon.” One by one the ghosts reveal the helplessness of a man against time, blood, sadness.
Mark Turcotte’s voice is haunting and memorable, though, and in the end, his words give him power.

Read this to feel ancient America

You can feel the wind-the beat of drums-in these poems of Mark Turcotte, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. The first section of poems, The Back When Poems all begin with the same nine words:

Back when I used to be Indian
I am...

The tumbling of tenses in these nine words repeated in the thirty-three poems of this section hint at the tumbling of time-histories both ancient and recent, and the tumbling of cultures in this collection.

The poems in the second section speak to Turcotte's very personal story of traveling to Fargo, North Dakota to see to the burial of a father he hardly knew.

You can feel the ancient history of America in this collection, and hear its drum beat pass reluctantly from the poet's father to him, and from Turcotte to his own child. These poems, which explore childhood, father and motherhood, identity and race, make you think words like wind and dreams and bones and blood belonged to the Chippewa before they belonged to us, that we're borrowing them and we should take care to use them wisely. Turcotte has done well with his.

Exploding Chippewas

I had the opportunity in 2012, to be entertained by the author of this book, Mark Turcotte, at the National Federation of State Poetry Societes National Convention in Indiana. To hear the author read his poems was a pure delight. He has given me an insight into his early life living on the Turtle Mountain Reservation that I could not get otherwise. His poems are insightful and present a point of view that is an eye opener. He paints pictures with his words in a unique way. I would highly recommend his books to anyone without hesitation. I purchased this book from Amazon after reading two of his other books.

Efficient textbook or self-study guide

An efficient self-teaching guide to mastering academic writing. It focuses on the researched essay, devoting one chapter each to an essay of a different type (or purpose): comparison-and-contrast, cause-and-effect, argumentative, classification, and reaction. Each of these essay examples is analyzed with respect to rhetorical focus and the presentation of critical thinking. Thus the student is presented with a good example of five major types of essay and is led through a nuts-and-bolts analysis of what makes it effective. Embedded within the instruction are examples which help the student to recognize bad grammar and clumsy style. This "remedial" material is based on the actual subject matter of the essays, making it easy and rewarding for the student. Learning efficiency is also bolstered by the authors' choice of essay topics, which include art appreciation, psychology, law & ethics, career planning, and literary analysis. Thus Effective Academic Writing can be used as a multi-purpose tool, applicable to junior- and regular colleges, ESL, adoptable as a textbook but equally useful for self-study and career enhancement, or as a guide to preparing a college-entrance essay.
