About the Author
Wayne C. Booth (1921–2005) was the George M. Pullman Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. His many books include The Rhetoric of Fiction and For the Love of It: Amateuring and Its Rivals, both published by the University of Chicago Press. Gregory G. Colomb (1951–2011) was professor of English at the University of Virginia and the author of Designs on Truth: The Poetics of the Augustan Mock-Epic. Joseph M. Williams (1933–2008) was professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago and the author of Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace. Joseph Bizup is associate professor in the Department of English at Boston University. He is coeditor of the thirteenth edition of the Norton Reader and editor of the eleventh edition of Williams’s Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace. William T. FitzGerald is associate professor in the Department of English at Rutgers University–Camden.

Helpful for all levels!

As a PhD student, I had written dozens and dozens of research papers before reading this book. I wish now that I could redo them. The information presented in this book is clear and thorough. Even on my first skim of the book I have learned valuable skills that will improve my writing!! I only wish my undergrad professors had forced me to read this book previously!!

Quick-witted protagonist Locke is slowly succumbing to poison as his loyal companion, Jean, tries to find someone who can save him. The price of rescue gets the duo involved in running an election campaign in the city-state of Karthain, where the parties are fronts for two factions of terrifyingly powerful mages. The opposition campaign leader is none other than Locke's long-lost love, Sabetha, who knows all of his moves and has a few of her own. A set of flashbacks explores Locke, Jean, and Sabetha's shared past as a theatrical scam goes horribly wrong. Locke and company remain among the most engaging protagonists in fantasy, and Lynch sneaks in some incisive political parody while never overdoing the comedy. *Starred Review* Announced as early as 2008, the long, long, long-awaited sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006) and Red Seas under Red Skies (2007) finally arrives. The story picks up almost immediately after the end of Red Seas. Locke Lamora, professional thief and con artist, has been poisoned (“He was being unknit from the inside; his veins and sinews were coming apart”). He has only a handful of days left, but rescue from certain death comes from a most unexpected source: the Bondsmagi, the powerful sorcerers who haven’t exactly been Locke’s best friends until now. After ridding his body of the poison, they, of all things, offer him a job. They want him to help rig a local election, which doesn’t sound all that tricky, except that someone else is working the other side of the street, and she’s at least as clever and ruthless as Locke: Sabetha Belacoros, Locke’s long-lost love. This rousing adventure expands on themes introduced in the first two books and tells the full history of Locke and Sabetha, whose relationship was tantalizingly sketchy in the first installment. The Bondsmagi, too, are shown here in more detail than ever before, and Lynch has some serious surprises in store for fans of the first two books. It might have taken Lynch a lot longer to publish the book than fans wanted, but it was definitely worth the wait. A landmark publishing event in the sf world. --David Pitt

... Gentleman Bastards - which is to say it's still good, but not as good

Disappointing after the other 2 books in the Gentleman Bastards - which is to say it's still good, but not as good. I think there is a level of intensity of emotion and angst and history between Locke & Sabetha that is never fully realized despite the explanations. How it ends up reading, she's an emotionally unstable bitch and he's forever a lovelorn puppy she's kicking. I am 100% certain this wasn't the intent. But her motives are too mysterious, it makes her actions seem capricious and cruel.

It is easier to get lost in a fantasy when the people still seem real, Locke's awkwardness around her, her flightiness, his undying loyalty - they all push me out of the story and make the characters seem thinner.

While I do not love it, I did like it

Let me begin this by saying I am an avid Scott Lynch fan, and will remain a fan even after this novel. While I do not love it, I did like it. Do not like Sabetha. Do not like. Do not like. I felt as if the love story and Locke's constant brooding and bumbling over her really slowed down the plot and what was important in the present. Skipped over a lot of the interludes this time because I didn't find them to be as interesting as they were in the previous novels. I'll reread them in time, but not now.

I AM eagerly waiting for the next book though. I'm hooked on this series.

Unfortunately this book was another step down from the previous novel, which of course was itself a lesser novel than the first.

That said, it was still highly entertaining and had points of brilliance. The Lies of Locke Lamora is in my top 10 novels of any genre list (albeit I love fantasy the most) and it goes without saying that such quality is hard to live up to. While this book still contained much of the raucous amusing dialogue, twisted plot lines, and devilishly delightful trickery that made the two previous novels wonderful, it seriously lacked the enormous ambiance of dread, the wonderful corporeal settings, and, most notably, the profound emotional weight found in the previous installments. Hope the next is better or I will probably not continue on.

I may not know art - but I know what I like

This book was a disappointment to me personally. I did not like most of the art. There is a lot of nudity and I find most of the illustrations have absolutley nothing to do with the songs. I don't see why "Strawberry Fields" needs to be illustrated by a photo of 2 completely naked children. The lyrics are in small type and seem trivial compared with the graphics. To me - it was more that the lyrics were an afterthought and the art work was most important. Also - there ware a lot of solo work by John Lennon included - but equal attention was not given to the other 3 Beatles for their solo efforts. If you are into freaky 60's art and completely gratuitous nudity - then you will probably like this book. But - it's not for every Beatle fan. Oh - and BTW - the person who wrote that "Two of Us" was about Paul's relationship with John and not about Paul & Linda - read Anthology or "Many Years From Now". That song IS about Paul & Linda.

The Beatles content seems to be about 2%. Just weird pictures that have nothing to do with Beatles lyrics.

The pictures don't seem to have much to do with the Beatles or their songs, or lyrics, at all. This book is a joke. I don't recommend it at all. There are a few interesting pictures in it, but it's a large book and a waste of time and money.

A Mormon's View

As a devout Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints)for 53 years, even a Bishop for 6 of those years, I felt deeply that there was more to life. I was not happy with the "one size fits all" doctrine found in Mormonism or that I was put in a position to constantly judge others based on their behavior. This book more than any other I ever read gave me the deep understanding of the meaning of life, of Christ, and of the great Masters of old. Most religions believe they hold the only path back to God. I decided many years ago that that belief is something to be overcome, not embraced. The MasterPath Divine Science of Light and Sound Vol. 1 offered the first insight as to how all those religions fit in the grand scheme of things, and how to "escape" into a life of true freedom - finally. What an amazing, stunning, liberating book!

"Man Behind the Curtain?"

The reviewer who warns you to beware of the "man behind the curtain" has obviously not read this book. Even if he has read it, he certainly does not understand it. No where in the pages of this book is a single solitary mention of "Garji". The reviewer has not based his remarks on the book, but rather information he heard at a seminar, which he also did not understand. It's okay not to understand something, but one should not criticize what they cannot comprehend. This is one of the most beautiful spiritual books ever written. If you are truly searching ... try this book.

A Brilliant Companion to an International Phenomenon

Piketty further explores inequality with this "prequil" volume. Many of the 1-star Amazon reviews of his earlier volume claimed Piketty was a "Marxist" when, in fact, Piketty is an avowed free-market capitalist (Social Democrat), and reserves very harsh words for Marx in both volumes. Apparently, someone on a far right media outlet told their viewers to "give this communist book a bad review" -- which is why so many one-star reviews occurred in a one-week period of time.

Piketty admits that there is no "single reason" for wealth and income-growth inequality. But he does point to a "primary factor," which is a nation's fiscal and tax policies. As many economists have noted, American wealth and income-growth inequality has been worsening since the enactment of "supply side" tax and fiscal policies in the early 1980s. As Piketty and his researcher's note from FED data, the period 1950 to 1980 exhibited a far healthier socioeconomic balance, both in class-wealth and class-income-growth.

By the mid-70's, the "99%-class" had amassed roughly 75% of all U.S. wealth. But today, the 99%-class owns less than 55% of all U.S. wealth. Where did all that wealth go? It trickled UP into the hands a few ultra-wealthy families and trusts (much of it into dark, tax-free offshore accounts, which Piketty estimates between $30T and $50T). Piketty notes that it's not just a profound shift in class-wealth percentages, but in real dollars, as well. In 1978, the average net worth of families in the bottom fifty per cent was $29,000. in 1989, net worth had fallen to $22,000. Today, the average 50%-class net worth is $11,000 (these figures are adjusted for inflation.) At the very top, of course, things have been very different. In 1989, the average net worth of families in the top 5% was $3.6 million. By 2013, it was $6.8 million.

In 1978, the bottom 50%-class owned 7% of all U.S. wealth (reasonably healthy). Today, the bottom 50%-class owns just 1% of all U.S. wealth (that’s NOT a typo). This is the real tragedy – the slow impoverishing of America as a result of poor fiscal policy planning and adaptation. Some argue that net wealth has moved dramatically upward because of external events beyond our control, such as Chinese manufacturing, automation, etc… Piketty points out that such “economic externalities” should be compensated by healthy fiscal policy. Strong, well-designed fiscal policy adapts to all externalities, and keeps all socioeconomic classes in healthy proportion. But since the enactment of Reaganomics, we have done the opposite, and it is killing our national socioeconomic balance.

I would point out that Reagan's budget director, David Stockman, now admits that supply side theory was “poisonous” for the American middle-class. He now calls it "crony fascism" and warns that we are headed for a socioeconomic breakdown if we continue on current trend. We're bankrupting our middle class, and at the core of this corruption is a literal handful of ultra-wealthy interests in control of government fiscal policy lawmaking, via SuperPAC cronyism, K Street revolving doors, Citizen United corruptions (money as speech), and campaign financing laws. Piketty reminds us that gross inequality is not a partisan issue. It is simply a small cadre of ultra-concentrated power and greed against the common good.

Piketty notes that the USA is not alone in its growing economic imbalance. Nations like Switzerland have also become greatly imbalanced, due to similar supply-side fiscal policies. He notes that, once one country starts down the supply-side path, other nations tend to follow, otherwise they risk losing their ultra-wealthy citizens to countries whose "high-earner" tax rates are significantly lower. Piketty calls this “tax competition.”

Piketty, as a free-market capitalist, agrees that the top 1% class requires a disproportionate amount of wealth to capitalize new businesses, assure market liquidity, and so forth. Piketty, along with most other progressive economists, peg a “healthy ratio” of 1% to 99% wealth at around 15%. It’s noted that conservative economists would put that ratio closer to 25%, maybe 30%. The problem is that our 1% class now owns 45% of all U.S. wealth, and climbing year over year, while our 0.1%-class is now paying increasingly regressive tax rates (while everyone else pays progressively). It’s noted that we’re now at the same level of socioeconomic inequality last seen in 1928, and trending towards 1933 levels, brought about largely by similar "Harding-Coolidge" supply-side tax and fiscal policies we tried in the Roaring 20s.

He points to a number of alternative fiscal solutions, including wealth tax, etc.., but admits that going back to a 1950-1980-style progressive policy will be difficult (tax competition, etc.). However, if we don’t return to a fair fiscal and tax system that better balances ALL classes, we will continue to cripple the engine that drives GDP growth, which is our broad middle-class. So he leaves us with a choice, and it is up to those people who understand the issues to drive policy change, or face the eventual social, national, and international consequences.

Just read Capital, the research here is outdated

I'm not against Piketty or this subject, which I think is well worthy of more research and discussion; however, the publication date is a bait and switch. The 2nd sentence of the introduction is a a warning flag: "It should be noted that the overall structure has not changed since 1997 and essentially reflects the state of knowledge and data available at that time. As a result the book does not fully take into account.." (p.5)

Capital is absolutely terrific; I highly recommend getting that book. Far more extensive and currently relevant.

At Least She Had A Ghostwriter This Time

Let me preface this review by saying I can't stand Farrah. I love to hate her.

This book was much better written than her memoir, which really doesn't say much but at least the writing was intelligible this time. It's pretty obvious that Farrah had a ghostwriter or a lot of help. Farrah can hardly form a coherent sentence when she speaks.

The book is an unabashed trip for Farrah's over-sized ego. Farrah, er Fallon, is beautiful. Everyone is jealous of her beautiful face, tan skin, perfectly sculpted body, and in the end, how great she "performs" on camera (I'm not joking!). It's ridiculous. All we really know about Fallon/Farrah is that she's super pretty and awesome, nothing is ever her fault, the media portrays her negatively, and everyone-her friends, family, lovers-uses her. We never really get below the surface of Fallon/Farrah and I suspect this is due to the fact that there's really not much there to Farrah the person. She's superficial, petulant, self-righteous and pretty dumb. She's all appearances and surfaces, there is no depth to her.

Farrah uses this book to vindicate herself in the aftermath of her porno. She trashes everyone: the porn company, her costar, her family and friends. It all turns out in the end that Fallon/Farrah was basically tricked into making the porno by her sketchy agent (who she oddly never met until the porno filming). Kanity, the producer of the porno, is of course just jealous of Fallon/Farrah because Kanity had wanted a career in porn but wasn't good enough. Kanity is jealous of Fallon/Farrah and her ability to "perform" better than any professional porn actress.

Fallon/Farrah's costar is given a similar treatment but at times the way he's written is a bit confusing.Obviously for Farrah this is her revenge at James Deen. She gives him "anal" cancer!

Fallon/Farrah gets sent to rehab at the end of the book. Of course she's immediately told by her therapist that she doesn't need to be there.

Fallon/Farrah made a huge deal about using protection during the filming of the porno. This is interesting since Farrah didn't use protection in her actual porno and proceeded to fake a pregnancy scare for media attention.

I could go on forever about this but I won't. If you love Farrah you'll probably like this book. If you love to hate Farrah, like me, this will be an entertaining diversion. All in all this further cements my belief that Farrah is a petty, shallow person.

For extra laughs, be sure to read the about the author part at the end. Farrah is described as The Top Reality Star and describes the God awful album released with My Teenage Dream Ended as "therapeutic music singles!" Therapeutic? I don't think so!

My curiosity got the best of me...

I admit I just had to see if this girl could do something right for once. Well she can't. This book is pretty much everything you have heard about her in all that gossip rags made into a book. I'm ashamed that the CEO of Ellora's Cave went so far as to write a 4 page excuse in defense of the author, basically saying if we don't like the book it's because we are wrong to have a poor opinion of the author. I'm upset I spent money on this piece of garbage when I should have known better. The main character is a vain, self absorbed, immature girl who thinks that everyone either wants her or wants to be her. Don't waste you time.

I loved this book!!!

I loved this book! I absolutely adored this book! I read it in one sitting and when I turned the last page, I still did not want to put this book away. Jessica McQuinn has created a fantastic book filled with romance, tragedy, sorrow, happiness, trust, family which is wonderfully combined into one story. I really enjoyed it, especially because she is dealing with very difficult topics and being able to show that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It had the magical aura around it which made you think that even though life treats you unfairly, there is a way to come through all the difficulties.

WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!

Regarding the plot:

The plot starts with backlashes to the beginning of Charlie's and Gideon's relationship. They have been married for one year and while Charlie is preparing their one year's of wedding anniversary, the author takes us back to how Charlie and Gideon meet, how they get married and how the first year of marriage has been and also introduces us to their families. At the same time Gideon is on his way home to Charlie and trying to think of a way to tell Charlie, that he has to go to a mission. Mission, which can be lethal and will last for 6 months.

After Gideon is telling Charlie the news, the relationship is getting more complicated and they have only three days to fix it. Charlie finds it difficult that she will be left home alone, not knowing what is going to happen to her husband. She is scared and afraid of telling it to Gideon.

After Gideon leaves, Charlie needs to deal with the fact that her husband is a NAVY Seal and she cannot change that. She finds support at Gideon's family who treats her like their own daughter.

Two weeks after Gideon has left, Charlie gets a visit from military representative - at least that is what Charlie thinks. She is scared to death that the guy will bring her very bad news from Gideon. She can barely stand on her feet when the guy enters.

But there is no bad news. The guy who is member of Gideon's team has other plans. He rapes Charlie brutally. After the rape he threatens to kill Gideon if Charlie tells.

Now the story gets really complicated. Charlie is devastated, shamed and afraid. Charlie needs to deal with consequences what has been done to her. She cannot tell anything to Gideon.

The pain and complexity of the story changes when Gideon's brother sees the rapist to leave Charlie's apartment with the smile on his face. Tyson, Gideon's brother is convinced that Charlie is cheating on Gideon. Tyson does not even consider other possibilities and makes sure that Gideon who is still on a mission will know about that.
Charlie has no idea what Tyson has done and keeps trying putting her life together again. She finds out that she is pregnant. Luckily she finally confides to Paige - Tyson's girlfriend and gets lot of support from her.

When Gideon comes back, the situation in the family is horrible - Charlie avoids her in-laws, Tyson has been treating Charlie very badly. There is a lot to make up and repair.

Patching up all the scars is a painful process and so is finding the trust again. The author tells this story through the aspect of finding the trust, finding the will to heal, forgiving yourself and others. It's a story about family which almost breaks up because of the pain, missing trust.

What I really loved about Indivisible is that both Charlie and Gideon are finding each other again and that their families do find the strength to support each other and continue the healing process. Everybody was influenced by the rape, not only Charlie and Gideon, but everybody around them.

Regarding the characters:

I adored the main characters: Charlie and Gideon. Charlie was so strong and yet so fragile after the rape. I also admired her strength to find the love to Gideon. Even after the rape her main concern was to make sure that Gideon is alright, that he can concentrate to his mission and not to get hurt. I really loved how Charlie finally found the energy to go against the rapist, to stand up for herself and all the other women the violator has raped. Gideon was loveable, I really loved the fact that even after Tyson told him about cheating, and he never gave up on his love and trust towards Charlie. It was adorable how he managed the knowledge about the violation of Charlie. His support to Charlie was admirable.

I think that the author did wonderful job with the supporting characters! All of them had a huge role to play in the story. Tyson, who was conflicted person, who really wanted to be like his brother that he forgot finding out who he was himself. Paige - who was calm, nice, balanced person and who forced Charlie to go on with the life. Gabby, who had temper as big as life itself and who stood up for Charlie, when she needed it mostly. All the supportive characters were so smoothly connected to the story and to the main characters that I cannot even imagine the book being without any of them. Brilliant work from the author!

Generally:

I have only positive words about this book! It was brilliantly written for contemporary military romance. I also enjoyed that there was so much humor in this otherwise serious book. I laughed a lot and the humor also balanced the seriousness of the Indivisible. There were lots of funny scenes from the hospital when Charlie was given a birth, in the dialogue between the characters. I loved the humor!

Generally, this book is definitely a must read book if you enjoy contemporary romance. Jessica McQuinn is definitely an author worth reading and I cannot wait until she writes and publishes new books!

Military Family Drama & Trauma

Do you like "Romantic Suspense" or "Men in Uniform"? If so, have I got the book for you!

Indivisible is Jessica McQuinn's second novel, featuring a young married couple facing the danger and forced separation of life in the military.

Charlotte "Charlie" Cooper (I love that name) is finishing her college degree and savoring the last moments of togetherness with her Navy SEAL husband Gideon before he leaves for six months on assignment. They've only been married one year and she's feeling scared and bereft about his departure.

Gideon is a muscled bo-hunk whose heart is almost as big as his biceps. I loved when he knows he's made a mistake with Charlie and goes about his bumbling yet charming way of trying to apologize. He's smarter than he looks!

Gideon had me giggling several times, like when he attends a briefing for the mission and Charlie sends him naughty text messages. He bounces his knee so hard he knocks the table, spilling coffee and drawing his superior's negative attention. Later in the story:

"He sat with the phone to his ear listening to the horrible Muzak crap. `Like a Virgin' was never meant to be instrumental. Despite his annoyance, he found himself tapping his fingers to the song, which irritated him even more. Then he started singing along, trying to comfort himself." (p. 258)

I can totally picture the humorous scene of a Navy SEAL humming a Madonna song.

I enjoyed learning about Gideon and Charlie's unconventional engagement via flashbacks throughout the first section of the novel. I also liked the complexity of Gideon's family. Jessica McQuinn did a wonderful job creating vivid and layered characters for the Cooper family and their partners. What I liked most of all was the plot. The summary on the book jacket describes an "ordeal" Charlie endures during Gideon's absence. I was expecting one thing but was quite surprised by what actually happened.

What I didn't like as much was that the villain seemed a bit one-dimensional. I'm intrigued by the military and I'd prefer more chapters devoted to Gideon's adventures, but I realize the focus of the novel is more on the family drama at home.

I definitely recommend this novel as a sweet and realistic love story. You will cheer for Charlie and Gideon to remain "indivisible"!

Intense and Moving

I loved this book, even though it was a little more intense than I expected. This is no light and fluffy romance. The story starts on Charlie and Gideon's anniversary and you get the sense that they are a happy couple, but he has some bad news to deliver. Details of their whirlwind courtship come through flashbacks. I was hooked right away. I would recommend reading this with a box of tissues. **I don't like posting spoilers, but it is important to note that there is a rape scene.

Like Thomas Hardy, who created his fictional Wessex out of his native Dorset, and William Faulkner, who used Lafayette County, Mississippi, as the basis for his imaginary Yoknapatawpha County, O'Hara transformed his hometown of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding anthracite coal region into one of literature's great fictional landscapes. Setting five novels and more than 50 stories in what he called his "Pennsylvania Protectorate," O'Hara recorded with great honesty the lives of Gibbsville's inhabitants--from Polish coal miners and Irish Catholic shopkeepers to the Protestant country club set. Editor Bruccoli, who championed O'Hara as one of America's great short writers in his biography The O'Hara Concern ( LJ 9/15/75), has gathered into one volume 55 Gibbsville stories written over a 30-year span. Included are some of O'Hara's most famous tales, including "The Doctor's Son," "Imagine Kissing Pete," and "The Bucket of Blood." Since many of these stories are drawn from previous collections, libraries already owning such anthologies as The Collected Stories of John O'Hara ( LJ 4/15/85) might want to consider this an optional purchase. Quite a Collection!

I am from O'Hara's Collieryville and can recall English / Literature teachers in high school saying: There's not a John O'Hara among the lot of you!

Well, who was/is John O'Hara, why should I care, and if he's so great why aren't we reading his stuff in class? All good questions with very good answers when you get into this collection which contains some first-class 'adult' themes which clearly kept John out of the school library!

This is a collection of short stories. One of my favorite genres. Sometimes the story is so short it can end in 17 or even fewer pages and be finished like the slam of a door or leave you wandering down your own 'what if' trails. Continuing some of these to 200+ would be a disservice to storyline and reader alike.

This collection is a great look at the Schuylkill County coal region during the period my grandparents grew up in and during the younger days of my parents. The argot is spot on if yiz know wut I mean.

The chararcters are human. Perhaps too human at times. The era is just after the Great War and into the Great Depression. It opens with a longish story set during the time of the Spanish Flu pandemic and is just too real at times. I can actually visualize many of the roads travelled, literally, and see the locales under discussion even if many of them were mostly ruins when I was younger. This helps bring alive the stories from many relatives as to what a 'swell place' this used to be to hang out.

I'm hooked. I'm looking for more O'Hara and plan to start on this guy called Updike. I advise you to join the reading party if you like true realism in literature from that period. It's better than F. Scott Fitzgerald IMO.

John O'Hara deserves to be more widely known. Nobody writes conversational English better than O'Hara. Excellent writing, good yarns and memorable characters in a small town that could be anywhere. Excellent.

An American great

John O'Hara captured a snapshot of a time and place and preserved it in the pages of his stories. His writings are of great interest to me as they are set in the coal region of Northeast PA where I live. O'Hara's writing is crisp and his depiction of life in small patch towns spot on. The characters are unforgettable. He was a genius.
