WOW. I don't usually write reviews, but felt compelled to for this book. This story is so honest, so real, so funny, and so heart wrenching that it demands a thank you. It's a hard book to read at some points, and a hard book to put down at all times. The writing is quick paced, vivid, and witty, sort of a "girlfriend's guide to addiction", a page turner that has you wondering whether you want to know what happens next at some points, as you root for the heroine.

This book is really two books in one: A fabulous summer beach book offering an authentic, funny, and insightful look into the world of addiction for those lucky enough not to be touched by it, and it's also a compassionate and accountable companion for anyone's journey on the path to sobriety. From hopeless to healthy, this is what it takes...

For a female attorney who drank and used as copiously as Lisa Smith did, I'm surprised most anyone who had any contact with her in her firm wasn't well aware that she had an addiction problem. I practiced law for many years as an active alcoholic, basically of the binge drinking variety. So even though I only drank on weekends for the most part, I learned you get pegged pretty quickly. There's just too many ways for people to tell and for the firm's lawyers to figure it out, no matter how good you are at maintaining. A little mouthwash in the mornings isn't going to hide it.

So while I didn't believe Smith's version of how she was skating by undetected, I found her amazing somewhat repetitive drunkalogue both entertaining and scary, though shallow. Anyone with an alcohol or coke problem will find themselves here in full debilitating glory. The intense pressure we put on ourselves as active alcoholics is a crushing experience right up until we "stop digging."

The recovery portion of this memoir is the best part. The fact that she never relapsed after initially seeking in-patient treatment and her willingness to change and grow into a sober person is an enlightening guide to all those who want to know what it really takes to turn it all around. If you're having trouble grabbing hold of a program or path to sobriety, this just might be the book that helps you figure out what it takes.

Well written

When I finished this book (as an ebook), I was a shocked by how many I-was-an-addict-who-got-sober stories that were recommended to me (“If you liked this book, here are fifty similar books you might like . . .) I like these stories of successful people who lost everything and then claw their way back up to success. In Lisa Smith’s story, she almost lost everything but caught herself before that happened, which is amazing considering that she says she didn’t go a day without drinking for ten years. The drinking eventually morphed into barely making it to eleven a.m. to an early lunch where she could order drinks, to starting to drink in the mornings and using coke to keep her going. How she kept her high-powered job while doing this and how she didn’t land in the hospital until the day she checked herself into detox is also stunning.

My favorite of this genre of nonfiction will always be Augusten Burroughs’ Dry because I laughed out loud and cried my guts out all through that one. I didn’t laugh or cry once during A Girl Walks into A Bar, but there are words of wisdom on living life sober. This book also didn’t have the harrowing aspects of a book like The Night of the Gun by David Carr because she wasn’t wandering into crack dens in the middle of the night. Instead, as a New Yorker, she just had boxes of wine delivered and would call her coke dealer as if she were ordering a pizza.

This is a well-written book for the genre, but it doesn’t break any new ground.

I was a little disappointed in the style it was written in

I was a little disappointed in the style it was written in, I had bought a different book from this series and loved it. I thought this would be similar, but the book I bought must have been made in the early 2000's. Nonetheless a good read, but not my favorite. And I love spooky books.

Where Ghost Hunting Began

For a book written over twenty years ago, this is an excellent volume for seeing the real beginnings of what we now know as the 'ghost hunting' movement. Most of the reviewed cases, esp. those of Elke Summer and the small 'Green Man', are cases rarely found in other later publications by other authors. Other more commonly visited are given their due space. Contextualizing what was happening is often the difficult part with compilations like these, and this series has a smooth style that combines well the facts and the prose smoothly to the point where it reads less so much as a collection of reports as a series of beloved 'ghost stories'. Be sure to pay attention to the dark, emboldened text captions for the photographs. An excellent companion to the two other spirit-related volumes in the series, Spirit Summonings and Ghostly Encounters. What it may lack in details is understandable for its age, but otherwise a great beginning and introduction just the same.

Rich, challenging, literary anthology that demands re-reading

At first I was a bit disappointed in this collection, because the earliest stories didn't seem ecotopian, utopian, or even SF in character. After I discovered the editor's endnotes, though, the intention behind the collection and its total vision became apparent, and the inclusion of the early stories made perfect sense.

As Dr. Robinson himself notes, the stories don't tend toward standard utopian themes---namely the planned, perfect, permanent society---but they instead reflect the dirty, earthy, organic, fertile concerns of the ecotopian. The "stories reveal everywhere their writers' belief that the societies they depict are preferable to the boxed existences of modern, urban life" (p. 346) through embodied engagement with the world of physical nature and the re-infusion of meaning into everyday life. "What these stories ask us to reconsider is what is really important in life, and thus new definitions of utopia must be reconsidered as well" (ibid).

"It's not that [these stories] advocate a simple return to nature, or a rejection of technology, which given our current situation would be nothing than another kind of ecological impossibility." Instead, these stories, "reject ther inevitability of a machine future" (p. 11).

Not all of the stories are immediately accessible, and many, if not most, demand re-reading in order to get a full appreciation of both the ideas and the writing in which those ideas are expressed. Most of the stories in the anthology really impressed me, but my favorites (at least right now) would have to be "Hogfoot Right and Bird-hands," "House of Bones," "Chocco," and "Newton's Sleep," all of which explored essential themes about what it means to be human in communion with (or separation from) the world of biological nature.

All in all this is a superb science fiction anthology that belongs on the bookshelves of anyone interested in utopian and ecotopian fiction, about the current state of humanity, and about our possible futures.

sort of excellent

By the far the two best stories in this collection are Terry Bisson's "Bears Discover Fire" and Pat Murphy's powerful and eloquently written "In the Abode of Snows." After that, the other stories didn't seem to stir me quite as much .They were well written yes, but still... The extensive reading list at the end of the book is especially helpful to those interested in the ideas behind the variuos themes in the story. For that and the 2 stories, i gave it the above score.
