Funny book.

I bought this book in honor of some vegetarian friends and relatives. Everyone will enjoy it, even if you are a confirmed meat eater. It would be a great gift for Christmas or birthdays. It is lighthearted and vegetarians will love it.

I bought this book because my husband is a vegetarian and I am a meat eater. This book is funny even for a meateater to read. I understand some of my husband's concerns and humor about meateaters vs vegetarians. I ate tofu tonite for dinner. Will there be a sequel?

Very funny and clever book! I loved the vegetarian zodiac section and how to socialize as a vegan. Too funny. I really died reading the question and answer section for new vegetarians...Lol! Then with the "psychic " interviewing the dead vegans , I thought I would pee my pants. Great job! I needed this.

Excellent general UNIX reference

This was the textbook for a "UNIX with Shell Programming" course I took in college and I found it very useful and informative for that course. I've also referenced it a number of times since completing that course, particularly for shell programming basics. It offers a great overview of primary subjects anyone working with UNIX or UNIX-like operating systems should know. I don't know about it being a "complete" reference, as that would probably be impossible for any single book to accomplish. However, this book is still a great reference to have on hand for a first look at a topic, although you may have to do further research or reading elsewhere if you want to really dig into minute details on a particular subject, which is the only reason I didn't give it a fifth star.

I sure hope you don't intend to read this cover to cover. It functions best as a reliable and comprehensive reference to unix. For both system administrators and programmers. Yes, if you are the latter, you still have to deal with the operating system, even if you hide inside a programming language most of the time.

The various unix shells are evenhandedly described. The Bourne shell. The c shell. Korn shell. Try not to get into arguments with unix fans over the choice of shell. It is better to regard these as equivalent in functionality, with only minor differences not worth arguing about.

As the book explains, there are several unix variants. But the coverage spans all the major types. You can also use the book profitably if you have a linux machine. Most of the linux commands are deliberately mimicking unix equivalents.

I really liked this book. I used it for a UNIX class, and then kept it because it was so useful. It is laid out in a nice, usable way, and presents the material in a beginner-to-intermediate way without watering down the information.

No escape, no quarter given to yourself.

As a zen practitioner, rather than a devote Christian, (no they are not mutually exclusive but rather a leaning in a direction) I was moved and changed by this book. Yes it is difficult language, and Kierkegaard has the discipline or a logician. So I read it slowly. It helped me understand more fully the Three Pure Precepts of Mahayana practice; Embrace the Good, Avoid All Evil, and Purify the Mind. Kierkegaard calls up two Guides, one leading us towards Good and the other away from Evil. Purify the Heart or the Mind? Not an important distinction if you look at both in depth.

He talks of the miracle of the Ultimate in powerful language "“Now the unspeakable is like the murmuring of a brook. Almost anything written by Soren Kierkegaard is worth reading. On the other hand, what with the pseudonyms and books "discovered" in abandoned desk drawers, and the like, it is often a challenge to figure out where Kierkegaard is speaking, or where Kierkegaard is using a character ironically. Bear in mind that this was a profoundly, if eccentricity religious philosopher. That should serve as a starting point in your search, anyway.

A must-read book for those studying Fethullah Gulen

Erkan Kurt’s compilation of Fethullah Gulen’s lead articles came to me very auspicious effort in many ways. Introducing a self-exiled, moderate, and progressive preacher to the world is something we all need today, at a time when misconceptions about Islam are abound. It is really intriguing that a person like Fethullah Gulen has not been gained a global recognition enough by the intellectual and spiritual communities and traditions. Perhaps more interesting than this is the fact that still many people don’t have any idea what the “Hizmet” Movement or Gulen Movement, “a loose network of civic and humanitarian projects that include schools, tutoring centers, universities, hospital aid and relief organizations, interfaith and intercultural dialog organizations, publishing houses, and media outlets” (p.vii) is all about.

In his introduction, the editor Dr. Erkan Kurt (also the translator) describes Fethullah Gulen’s lifestyle as “very modest and yet socially active” (p.viii) which summarizes Gulen’s entire life journey; extremely humble, but also very interactive. Kurt also argues that Gulen is a moralist like Kant and a “wise teacher” like Ghazali or Rumi (p.ix). There are 40 essays in this reader collected in six chapters. Each chapter has its own theme.

Entitled Humanity & Civilization, the first chapter starts with humanity and takes it to concepts like “woman”, “ideal society”, “civilization”, and “nature”. But Gulen also touches some other concepts elegantly. Especially his description of love is simply brilliant. “Love does not fight for ascendancy, it is already enthroned” (p.3) is an apt description about love. “A person armed with love needs no other weapon” (p.5) is a strong argument against so-called fundamentalist Muslims.

Gulen, on the other hand, does not ignore the animal side of the human beings, his emphasis on our Hobbesian side (p.9) as well as the competition between our animal and angelic side is noteworthy (p.10). When talking about the women, he argues that “woman and man share the same divine creation and mission in the world; they are like two faces of a single reality” (p.25). In “The Ideal Society”, we see that it start with the ideal human, the prerequisite for such a society (p.31).

Gulen also makes comparisons between certain concepts. For instance, he compares “civilization” with “modernization”, contending that the latter “can change the appearance of life, but it does not necessarily civilize people” (p.35). Sometimes, his unique approach to a specific concept like nature is worth contemplating: “Nature was like a magnificent vessel sailing toward the country of love, or a chandelier with a thousand lights illuminating the realms beyond” (p.39). The very first chapter can be summarized as the place of humanity in God’s sight as well as the unique approach by Gulen to various concepts.

Second chapter, named Faith and Wisdom, is about the relationship between the believer and the God. Gulen again emphasizes love, seeing as the foundation of the believer’s actions. He mentions different types of love including the ones felt by the unbelievers towards people. Gulen distinguished all these types and thinks that love of God is the true type of love.

Chapter Three is called Morals and Sprituality. Gulen explains “heart”, “love” (again), “mercy”, “forgiveness”, “tolerance”, and “happiness”. Will take pages to expound on them, but for example, about heart we read this: “Today, we yearn for the stories of the heart, for in them we feel the reviving breaths of Jesus” (p. 82). In mercy, he associates it with nature: “Different voices and tunes merge in rhythms so perfect that only an all-encompassing mercy could be directing this mysterious music” (p.88).

The fourth chapter is Education. The editor selected the articles starting with the youth and then the philosophy of education Gulen adopts. As the source of inspiration of a social movement who focuses on education, Fethullah Gulen expresses his unique views on it. About a teacher, for example, he writes this: “One who grasps the significance of phenomena and builds associations between life and conscience. The teacher hears the truth in everything and can express it n any language. School is like a laboratory for future generations, and the teacher is its physician. The teacher is the one who can heal our social ailments and remove the dark clouds from our horizon” (p.119). Gulen’s main concern is to “cultivate virtue in youth” (p.123). He wants the pupils to have two wings, one filled with positive science and the other with virtue. That is why, Gulen thinks that humanity is at a crossroads to “elevate our children to the truth of their humanity or abandon them to alienation” (p.130).

People of Service is the name of Chapter Five. As the name suggests it is about the general characteristics of the people in the Movement. Gulen describes these people with many phrases, but “the people we are longing for” (p.133), “the architects of our future” (p.135), and “devout architects of our souls” (p.143) are equally striking. Gulen adds more words when describing these people. “In them, there is no quarrel between spirit matter” (p.134) says Gulen, bringing so-called faith/science clash to our attention. On an interesting note, in the article dated March 1991, Gulen states that “the new person… will utilize all possible means for reaching the minds and the heart of people, from publication to mass media” (p.140). It is no surprise that Gulen Movement or Service Movement is very active in mass and social media.

But perhaps the most conspicuous aspect of those people is the self-sacrifice. “So that Others may Live”, as the title of the book, summarizes Gulen’s purpose of life in this world. In many places of the book, he reiterates the same philosophy through different combination of sentences. “He suffers so that others may not suffer. his tears flow so that others may not weep. If he does not serve others, he considers himself worthless” (p.64), “True virtue lies in living for the sake of others” (p.95), “… he readily sacrifices his own felicity for the happiness of others” (p. 105), “… devout ones, who are not concerned with their own felicity and who understand that their own prosperity is intimately tied to the prosperity of others” (p.143), “they neglect themselves in order to better serve others” (p.145)

The final chapter is entitled Islam. Most of the chapter is dedicated to various characteristics of Islam with the very last article, the longest one in the book, is exclusively about Prophet Muhammad. When talking about Islam’s message to humanity, Gulen is concise: “(Islam) is rooted in divine revelation, remains within the framework of human reason, respects human feelings, and is enriched by inspiration (p.173). Gulen explanation to jihad is also a must-read.

In general, this book is a very useful compendium of articles to know better the life philosophy of Fethullah Gulen and the movement he inspired as well as the Islamic concepts which form its foundation. The editor, Dr. Kurt, does an excellent job with the selection and translation.

Unique scholar

Excellent book to examine Mr Fethullah Gulen's thoughts and ideas. He is a prominent Islamic scholar and social activist. No doubt, there are a lot of brilliant scholar in Islamic world. But he is the one of the unique example of Turkic Islamic world to mobilize individuals for working to peace of humanity. Educational institutes, humanitarian help activities and intercultural dialog organizations which are Hizmet movement'(aka Gulen Movement) main activities.

For those who don't believe in astrology, the tarot, or numerology, this premise is certain to sound like hokum. But surprisingly, Goldschneider's assessments of personality on the basis of one's birthday seem fairly accurate--at least in this reviewer's smallish survey. The author's theory is that because all of life is cyclical, people born on the same day occupy the same point in the year's cycle and thus share characteristics. Even total nonbelievers will find this big, attractive book fun to read. Each day gets a double-page spread with a personality description, health information, and the date's relation to astrology signs and the tarot. There are also long lists of people born on each day, though here's where personology gives pause. Can March 10's Harriet Tubman and Chuck Norris really have all that much in common? Ilene Cooper

ESPecially for people who want to know themselves and others

I really have no idea who Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers are, but somehow, they've managed to find out every little thng about every person I know and placed that information on the pages of this book.

Whenever people come over and want to get a quick thumbnail sketch about someone, they just find that person's birthday and turn to the corresponding page. There, in a concise but surprisingly in-depth essay, is a bit about the standards and practices of whatever birthdate you're looking at! Included are celebrities who were also born on that day throughout history and a few other interesting tid bits.

It makes for a fascinating party game, to find out just how "true" you think these comments are for you. So far, everyone I know has said they've been nailed to a tee by this book. I ask you... can everyone be wrong?

Highly recommended (for entertainment purposes only).

"Scary" seems to be a good term...

I'm not big on horoscopes, and hold a long-held belief that horoscopes are self-fulfilling once you read them. If you are looking for a "major romantic disaster" you will find one...whether or not you would normally classify it as major... but I'm digressing a tad.

I glanced through this book, looking up my birthday. AHH! Howly cow (and stronger, sensored words)! It pegged me perfectly. Even down to my chosen profession as an applied pedgagogical specialist dealing with underdeveloped, high-spirited, curious young people (I'm a teacher). Seesh.

This book, while it hasn't convinced me that astology and birthday personalities exists per se...has thoroughly convinced me that I'm being followed and closely watched by someone. Or that there is some truth in this "horoscopic" idea that has lasted for thousands of year.

READ THIS BOOK! Even us skeptics need to get something tossed into our faces once and awhile.

Too Much Fun ... Even For a Skeptic

I am too much of a skeptic to believe in astrology, but despite that I found THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS to be a fun read that provides literally years worth of entertainment.

What intrigued me most about this dictionary-sized book is that instead of dividing mankind into 12 groups based upon astrological signs, THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS devotes a two page spread to those born on each of the 365 days of the year and February 29th, too.

To some this may not seem interesting, but having grown up in a large family of six kids -- five of whom are Aquariuses -- I could never relate to astrology because none of my brothers and sisters has anything in common, yet we are all left to read the same paragraph in the newspaper horoscope.

There are three reasons you may want to check out the SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDYAS either for yourself or as a gift for a friend:

1. In many cases, if you look up your birthday, you will be shocked to find how accurately a complete stranger describes you. In my case, and in the case of many people I know, this book described us to a tee, including the good, the bad and the ugly;

2. When having friends over, this book can be enormously entertaining. Old, young, fat, thin, black, white, Puerto Rican, everyone loves to read about him or herself. Without a good professor, this book is just awful

I am using this book as a Georgia Tech Aerospace Engineering Dynamics requirement, and that is the only reason. The content is just awful. Nothing is explained. Each chapter has 4-5 examples of various problems and 2-3 pages of actual content writing, then just a ton of problems to work on. Avoid if you can and if needed, just hope for a great professor.

Not an "introduction" to the subject

This was my textbook for my sophomore course in dynamics back in 1985. Don't let the really cute little cartoon characters in the book fool you -- it was not an easy book to learn from. The author's concept, use and emphasis on reference frames is good, but the notation is confusing and very much unlike most other elementary texts on dynamics. I remember I kept reading the title of the book over & over, particularly, the phrase "An Introduction to Dynamics" -- with the emphasis here being on the word "Introduction." There is nothing introductory about this text and it would be better off titled as a text on Intermediate Dynamics. Ironically, when I got to my junior year a different professor used the same text for the intermediate dynamics course, which seemed more fitting to me. Even so, if you are looking for a text on intermediate dynamics I would recommend looking at some other titles, like Greenwood -- a true classic.

This book was so poorly done!

I was utterly disappointed with this textbook. The explanations were meager, at best, and did not help me understand the book. In my opinion, A very good textbook is one in which the student is virtually able to "teach him/herself" the material in the book without a professor. This book was apparently not written for that. Not only were explanations lacking, but derivations were hard to follow (skipped too many steps),.. Example problems existed but they were no help whatsoever for the extremely difficult problems at the end of each chapter. Worthless investment. I am trying to find a dynamics book that I can actually follow.

It is in great condition. It came quickly. My Grandma had this cookbook in her kitchen. The only thing missing in the cookbook I received is Grandma's handwriting on the inside cover. She wrote down how much water and how much powder to mix together for powdered eggs.

A little girl's first act of love for her father is to beg on the street for money to support his drug habit. A factory owner is forced to choose between buying into underworld economics and blinding his staff or closing up shop. A privileged schoolboy, using his own ties to the Kittur underworld, sets off an explosive in a Jesuit-school classroom in protest against casteism. A childless couple takes refuge in a rapidly diminishing forest on the outskirts of town, feeding a group of "intimates" who visit only to mock them. And the loneliest member of the Marxist-Maoist Party of India falls in love with the one young woman, in the poorest part of town, whom he cannot afford to wed.

This short story collection, teeming with life in the small Indian city of Kittur between the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and that of her son Rajiv in 1991, serves as a prelude to Adiga's Booker Prize–winning The White Tiger. Loosely based on a tourist itinerary, the stories meander through the lives of a motley array of hoykas and Brahmins, Muslims and Christians. We meet Xerox, the peddler of illegally copied books who doesn't mind having been arrested 21 times, as this seems a step up from his father's work as an excrement shoveler. Then there is Jayamma: the eighth of nine daughters, she is sent out to work because her father had only enough money to marry off six daughters. Her only comfort is getting high on DDT fumes and rubbing the buttocks of a tiny idol of baby Krishna. Adiga's India is a place of wildly disparate fortunes, where a 500-rupee meal at the Oberoi Hotel in Bombay scandalizes a construction worker who marvels at the sight of a 20-rupee note. It's a gruesome picture of existence, and the small epiphanies hit like bricks from heaven. (June)

Inspired by Balzac's La Comedie Humaine, Adiga intended to write a portrait of Indian life; as such, place and theme, rather than characters, tie together these 14 stories. Each starts with a travel vignette -- a daylong walk around a different section of Kittur -- that introduces the town. But, as he did in The White Tiger, Adiga soon delves deeper to focus on class and caste inequalities and characters "paralyzed by their powerlessness" (Newsweek). His meticulous descriptions of men, women, and children from all walks of life offer insight into modern India, one where few such as these experience redemption. Some reviewers commented on the unevenness of the stories and the lack of overall plot, but all agreed on Adiga's important role as "a sensitive chronicler of modern India" (Telegraph).

A walking tour through the real underbelly of India

Aravind Adiga is one of India's most refreshing contributions to the world of books in recent years. His first novel, a wildly original story of near-mythic proportions, "The White Tiger," won the UK's prestigious Man Booker Prize.

"Between the Assassinations" is a latticework of fourteen interrelated stories about the people of Kittur, a small town "on India's southwestern coast, between Goa and Calicut." The organizing principle of this book is the tourist guide, as each story begins with a walk through one of Kittur's distinctive neighborhoods, giving the reader a view of the town's humanity in all its extraordinary diversity. The stories in this collection are set in the tumultuous time in Indian history between the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 and that of her son, Rajiv, seven years later.

A casual visitor to India inevitably remarks on the abject poverty to be found among so many of that country's people. What remains invisible to the tourist comes to life in this remarkable collection of stories: the hopes, fears, doubts, and convictions of India's poor, and the survival strategies they forge in the midst of challenges the rest of us cannot conceive. As a portrait of caste and class and intercommunal (HinduMuslim) relations in modern India, this book truly excels.

An amazing look inside modern India

This series of short stories gives a gripping and unique look into life in modern India. The characters come at us from all parts of the society, and each one has an incredible story. Although these are short stories, they tie together smoothly and complete each other in their own way. Anyone who enjoys reading about India should not miss this book.
