Excellent reference

600 Basic Japanese Verbs is revised and updated from the original of 1998. I gather from reviews of the previous version that it was much used and loved. It is compiled by The Hiroo Japanese Center.

The new version however is even better and will be much appreciated by many students, either self learners or students in a classroom. It is the kind of book for Japanese studies you are always hoping to find, especially on verbs. Key improvement to this revision is the use of kanji, hiragana, and katakana in all the names of the verbs and example sentences of which there are tons.

For those students who feel at sea without romaji to help them, it is used as well.

The Introductory material is easy to understand, and not over written . In the Introduction there is an "Explanation of Verb Forms". I emphasize that all of the conjugation terms are explained very well, clearly and carefully, without being pedantic or obtuse. They come with with many example sentences. I believe this will be referred to over and over in using the book. It is invaluable.

The introduction includes an explanation of their use of Groups for conjugation. There is also a very useful page of verbs plus adjuncts.

In the main Guide section each verb has one page devoted solely to it. The verbs are listed in English alpha order with romaji in bold type next to the reading in hiragana. Under that, the verb is written with kanji and hiragana (Thank You!) with the meaning in English and an indication whether it is a transitive or intransitive verb. These two lines are really useful. The top of the page is also has which "group" the verb falls into, using the classification of group 1 (u-dropping conjugation), group 2 (ru-dropping conjugation) and Irregular conjugation (kuru and suru).

Below the verb name is the main chart for the conjugated forms. They are all given in Affirmative and Negative as such: Plain Form Present and Past, Masu Form Present and Past, Te Form, Conditional Plain and Formal, Volitional Plain and Formal, and Imperative. If there is no reading for a particular conjugation a small dash is inserted.

After the main chart is an Affirmative only listing of the verb in Potential, Passive, Causative,
Causative passive, Honorific and Humble. Both charts are written in romaji only.

Underneath these two charts are given 5 carefully chosen example sentences written first in romaji then in kanji and hiragana with some katakana, and below that, the sentence in English.

The good stuff hasn't ended yet. After the Guide to Verbs part, there is a short list of Compound Verbs with the words they are frequently used with, very simply stated, and with example sentences.. Then there is a nice long list (277) of commonly used Suru Verbs (nouns that become verbs with the addition of suru) listed in romaji then in kanji, hiragana and katakana and with an indication of transitive or intransitive. This will also be consulted very often and while there are probably countless suru verbs, these seem to be chosen with care for usefulness.

The book is afforably priced and has a durable cover that is pleasant to the touch.. It opens wide and is well glued. It looks like it will last for many years of use. I recommend it highly. It is the best of the verb books currently on the market, in my opinion.

Great For Someone Who Is Serious About Studying Japanese

Tuttle Publishing's latest Japanese verb reference book is a comprehensive guide to the non-native speaker wishing to learn Japanese. Compiled by Japanese language experts, the book contains 600 most common verbs in the Japanese language in their various forms. The serious student should pay close attention to the book's introduction, which explains how a seemingly overwhelming 600 verbs are distilled into 3 simple conjugation categories. The verb stems are visually easier to break when reading the transliterated Japanese examples in English because they are broken at the consonant ending, which cannot be done in Japanese. For example, the verb "to have", "aru" in Japanese, is broken into its stem "ar" before "imasu" is added to conjugate it into its "masu" form "arimasu".

The student familiar with Hiragana (the Japanese alphabet) will realize that if written in Japanese, HIragana will preclude him from being able to make the stem break at "ar" because each Hiragana letter ends with a vowel sound. The book then introduces the verbs in transliterated alphabetical order, first identifying each in their conjugation category and then listing their forms: formal, plain, negative, potential, conditional, passive and causative among others. Intermediate to advanced students will appreciate that the transliterated example sentences are also written in their Japanese form (with Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji) which provides additional learning.

After a thorough examination of 600 verbs, the book offers 14 most frequently used compound verbs followed by a shortlist of 277 "suru" verbs, which are nouns rendered into verbs when accompanied by a "suru" suffix. As a bilingual family of the English and Japanese languages, we would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about studying Japanese.

Finally Learning!

My mom is from Okinawa and we have lived on Okinawa several times. I even took Japanese at a local community college, but none of my textbooks were ever as good as 600 Basic Japanese Verbs! From the very beginning, in the introduction, the verbs are broken down into easy to understand categories: u-dropping conjugation, ru-dropping conjugation, and irregular conjugation. Never has anyone taken the time to explain this to me before and now I am finally starting to understand Japanese when I watch anime with my kids, watch J-drama, or listen to my mom speaking Japanese. The explanation of differentiating between the verb endings was even simple enough for my high school girls to understand and apply to their basic Japanese that they are learning in school. With the Japanese script, Romanized forms, and English translations, practicing verb usage correctly is a breeze while improving my reading skills. I just told their teacher about this book the other day and he is just as excited!

This was a well made book with great images and amazing information!

This is a great book that has so many great records listed in it. On top of that you get an amazing array of records in so many different areas. Filled with larger than life pictures, you will get lost in reading this with your family.

I have loved being a fan of Guinness World Records for years and every year I am always interested in seeing whether the people who held the awards continue to do so or not. I have got my daughters now hooked on this too.

This was a well made book with great images and amazing information!

Its been for how many years? A LONG time collecting these books year by year and I have never gotten out of interest in reading these books!

These books are great for collecting and I ensure that you will enjoy reading about the new and old records set!

Pros:
-Awesome Quality
-Never meets dissatisfaction
-Great for Collecting
-In Color not in black/gray/white
-Always new things to be read

Absolutely NONE.

My son loves it, but I'm not so happy about some of the "records"

My son has been reading and quoting this book since he received it for Christmas. It is a very large hardcover book, and the pictures in it are great. The only thing I don't like about it is that some of the records just seem really gross to me now and I don't remember my childhood copy having all those "records". He has given me examples of multiple gory injuries that somehow didn't cause death, like a man falling off a ladder with a drill bit that goes through his eye and pushed his brain to the side, and other unpleasant things, like the person with the most holes in their face who can run a string through his mouth from the hole in one cheek to the hole in the other.

He also got the video game version, which I almost prefer to this because of my examples, but he seems to like this one much more.

One of the ultimate reed books

This book is a must for any serious oboe player and reedmaker. The author is of the American school and the section on actually making reeds is firmly within this style, however there is a lot of information and pictures of reeds made from just about every conceivable school of reedmaking and therefore a very useful reference book. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who is on the journey of making better reeds and the sage advice contained within this book is most welcome.

Oboe Reed Styles: Theory and Practice

It's a fine way to see some of the world's most famous oboist's reeds and philosophies behind how their reeds are made. The only problem is that it is at least 20 years out of date, with little on current solo oboists. Almost all the oboists in the book are either retired or dead. Somebody needs to update this book (hint hint to the publishers).

Frank Hawkins is a conservation biologist and policy advisor with governments and local communities in Africa and around the world. He is currently CEO of IUCN's Washington, D.C., office.

Roger Safford is Senior Program Manager at BirdLife International in Cambridge, UK.

Adrian Skerrett has lived and worked in Seychelles for much of his life.

All three authors collectively have an unrivalled knowledge of the region's avifauna and have authored many publications on the birds of the Malagasy region.

Good content-- in between the jokes & verbose chatty writing

If jokes and verbose trying-to-be-clever writing were advertising, this book would be Oprah Magazine. But more on that later--I just needed a lead as per chapter 19 "Hook 'Em Early, Hook 'Em Hard."

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" is like an introduction 101 survey class to this topic. Among many other things, it covers the basics of the entire process from generating article ideas, to writing query letters to conducting interviews, writing basics, and even how freelance writers deal with taxes. Like a 101 class, this book provides breadth but not depth. Most beginning magazine writers will likely need more of the material on earlier parts of the process such as studying the market and writing query letters rather than dealing with taxes and contracts. However, as a survey course, they do have their place, with the exception of the chapter on writing books and book proposals. For an excellent, more in depth treatment of query letters, a topic a novice will definitely need, I recommend "How to Write Irresistible Query Letters" by Lisa Collier Cool.

Having published a handful of freelance pieces and knowing the basics of the process, I can tell you the information is provided is good, sound advice. My problem with the book is that you have to wade through so much verbose trying-to-be clever chatty writing to get to the basics you need as a freelance magazine writer. It's like the authors, unbridled from the tight word counts and no nonsense editing of magazines went nuts trying to be cute and clever. For one of many examples, there's a section called "Ratatatatat: Machine Gun Writing" which begins, "Do you feel like Bruce Willis in 'Die Hard' right about now? What the heck do we mean when we say machine gun writing?" Then there's another paragraph before they get to the definition. I think this book could have been edited by about 1/3 with no loss of content.

None-the-less, I appreciated the content in between the jokes, even though some of it was not in depth enough to my liking, such as the brief section on how to get clips. I especially liked the interviews with magazine editors discussing what writers need to do to break into writing for their publications. If you need an intro 101 survey of the career of freelance writing and don't mind wading through all the chatty wisecracking writing, this is the book for you.

This Book Sold Articles For Me

Before reading this book, I'd written and sold a couple of short fiction stories but had never tried nonfiction. I liked the idea of writing magazine articles but had no idea how to go about it. I picked up "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" because I like their simplified approach to topics and because I'd read the other IDIOT'S GUIDE Sheree Bykofsky co-wrote (Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published).
The Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles gives you a no-nonsense approach from start to finish, covering things like studying the market, generating ideas, querying editors, assignments, conducting interviews, and actually writing the article, as well as some tips on book proposals, the life of a magazine writer (waiting/praying for checks), even taxes.
After I read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" I thought up a couple ideas, fired off some queries, and sold three articles the month after I bought the book. Now I'm working on assignment (not spec) writing a second piece for one of the magazines to which I sold an article last month.
If you can write and if you have something interesting to say, this book and a copy of "Writer's Market" are the twin pillars on which you can build a freelance career.

No-nonsense, friendly advice

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles," by Sheree Bykofsky, Jennifer Basye Sander, and Lynne Rominger, is a straightforward yet entertaining book about the world of freelance writing. In such a book you might expect to find the typical information on writers' guidelines, stamped self-addressed envelopes, query letters, and making sure you spell editors' names correctly--and you will find that here. However, you'll also find quite a few other, less expected things.

The authors do not assume familiarity with the industry. They walk you through the rewards of being a freelance writer, explain why magazines hire freelancers and what freelancers do for magazines, share some success stories from real freelancers, share information from editors on what they look for in a writer, and provide a "reality check" to help you decide if this is what you really want to do. This book is particularly good about pointing out all of the mistaken attitudes, inadvertent errors and inappropriate assumptions that can mess up your chances. And it does it without either coddling you or harshing on you.

This book came out in 2000, but it does a good job of covering the basics of online publication--better than I've seen in many other places, actually. It doesn't just cover online versions of print magazines or a brief discussion of electronic rights. Instead it goes in-depth into 'zines, content providers, building your own web site in order to attract editors to you, and so on. It also goes into the business side of writing: business filing, taxes and contracts. It discusses how you can choose and create a specialty for yourself, and how you can decide whether or not you should develop an article into a book proposal!

This is a fantastic book. It contains only a handful of typos of the wouldn't-be-caught-by-a-spell-checker variety (most people probably wouldn't even notice). The advice is helpful and encouraging yet practical and realistic. I've rarely seen an approach that so clearly manages to convey the things to watch out for when freelancing without becoming preachy, condescending or morose, and there's plenty of advice in here that I haven't seen repeated in a dozen other places.

About the Author

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, a gifted writer, scholar, sociologist, historian, and activist, became the first African-American to receive a PhD from Harvard University in 1895. An exponent of full equality for African- Americans, Du Bois was a cofounder of the Niagara Movement, which became the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. A leading voice of the black community, Dr. Du Bois' teachings, writings, and lectures provided a platform for his views that prompted action and change. Until his death in 1963, W.E.B. Du Bois led a passionate life of ceaseless energy and purposeful writing.

The Talented Tenth

What a powerful classic in the academia world and dear to all African Americans who share his prospective. I had the pleasure to do a compare/contrast thesis on his view versus Booker T. Washington on the rise of the African-American race. Professor DuBois was considered one of the most influenced person of his time. I believe this book shares a deep concern which still sits with the African-American race today. I appreciate how DuBois outlines each issue and the why. This is a definite "must have" if you're studying in the African-American Experience or similar arenas.

The importance of a quality education

I heard of this book many years ago, but had never taken the time to read it until now. Seeing the problems of DuBois' day echo the same struggles of Blacks in America makes me both saddened and intrigued. He eloquently made his argument for higher education and the need for leaders to move a people-group forward. Reading this book has renewed my vigor for "complete" education. This book is a must-read.

Read this first before reading the bad reviews!

Well, some bad reviews here force me to write my own review for this excellent dictionary.
By the way, I am referring to the newest, third edition.
Some people here suggest the dictionary might include the word "refudiate". This is wrong!
This wrong word is nowhere to be found inside the book.
The book correctly lists "repudiate"!
What is true is that the Oxford dictionary-makers commented on this word being used by Sarah Palin and they named it "word of the year".
They don't condone the word "refudiate" and they never said they would ever include it in any of their dictionaries.
They just mean that this wrong word is both newsworthy and noteworthy.
So how can people come here and give the book a one-star rating when a) the book lists the right word and b) lexicographers just do their job and point out words to us that we must watch out for?
To me this shows that people who write such nonsense here are badly in need of a dictionary. I would suggest buying this book here then.
It is comprehensive, up-to-date and has great usage notes, which take the reader by the hand and explain word traps (common English errors) thoroughly.
The etymologies are well-written and you can literally feel the Oxford expertise in dictionary-making.
A real five-star piece of modern lexicography.
Any other rating below five stars is ridiculous.

A Dictionary for All

I recently purchased a Dictionary Stand for my Living Room and searched far and wide for the perfect dictionary to sit upon this stand. I considered the Oxford two volume set for $400, but Amazon suggested The New Oxford American Dictionary, Third Edition. Amazon displayed sample pages from this new edition and I knew this was the dictionary I have sought. I received the Third Edition within a few days and I have used the dictionary daily. The Third Edition provides the pronunciation, definitions, tells me if the word is current or archaic, the etymology of the words, and interesting facts about certain words. The dictionary provides far more than this. The Third Edition can be read as if one were reading a very well written History book.

One caveat, the Third Edition is large and heavy. This dictionary requires a table or stand dedicated to its use. It could be a chore to pick this book up and carry it to a chair for usage. But, I cannot praise this dictionary enough. This Third Edition is for the serious scholar, book lover, historian or for people who want a brief biography about a famous person. Finally, book stores charge $60 for this edition but Amazon charged me $37. Buy from Amazon and enjoy.

outstanding dictionary of "americanized" english

This is an outstanding dictionary of American English. At 2,000 pages and over 350,000 definitions, the reader usually finds the answer to questions. The text size in some dictionaries is too small but it is large and bold enough to clearly see the succinct definitions, examples, word type. A few photos are provided that kept my interest. By purchasing this book, I was offered a 6 month access to the Oxford Dictionary web site. I spent about an hour playing on its pages. I fantasized that I'd obtain access to a digital form of the 20 volume philological history of words and meanings, but that was just my hope. This is an excellent dictionary for adults and some high school students. I think that a dictionary, periodically updated, is something we all ought to have. There are lots of products that focus on lanaguge, english-american, slang, politics, etc. I give this a solid "A".
