Although beautifully written with a complex story, this third book wasn't as great as the first two for me personally

Something went wrong for me with this book. I loved the first two books, but about 200 pages into this one I started feeling weary. I skimmed a lot and what I found just made me feel wearier. I thought the length of this book would indicate a lot of important happenings, but it just made enough time for me to grow resentful of Lia and dislike the way the ending was cropped together because while it's toted as a "happy ending" there's no way it could ever actually work if you know anything about relationships and affection.

We still see some great writing, it's complex and highly detailed and well thought out, and the world building and politics are masterfully crafted, but we lost a lot of what Lia was in the last two books. She doesn't really seem to care much about Rafe in this book and her mentality shifts to following duty and the prophecies in the songs of Venda. I mean I get it, she's the Chosen One who is going to save all these people and that sort of stuff, but if Lia was going to do something for Venda she would have been better off never escaping with Rafe I feel. It's like the escape and all the problems clashing with Rafe over their conflicting responsibilities and desires was just excessive and unnecessary tension added in to thicken the book and plump it up. I mean, Rafe gets betrothed but at that point Lia is already set on helping other people and kingdoms and not being his queen/wife so I don't quite understand what the point of all this was. You'd think a couple who endured so much to be together wouldn't allow politics to get between them yet here we are with that unfortunate trope, you know, the one that goes "as soon as the pair everyone was hoping to get together got together intense things happen in plot to test and/or ruin that relationship." Can't we just have a couple get together and be happy and face all the problems of the world together and not tear them apart for the sake of tension and drama and dragging things out? It was honestly a bit frustrating.

If you came to this book for the romance, you'll be disappointed. This book veers a hard left from that route and puts romance into a sub-sub-sub plot that's just sort of barely there and feels very one sided most of the time (as in Rafe loving Lia but Lia not seeming to really care or what to fight to stay with him or anything), though I think how things turned out for Kaden and Pauline was a nice touch; I'd already predicted in the second book when Kaden said he'd seen a vision about him and Lia in Venda with him holding a baby. But if you wanted politics and battles and all that sort of stuff, this book would suit you absolutely. It's full of taking over kingdoms, waging battles, weeding out traitors, picking up the mantle of duty, self-sacrificing for a country, maneuvering the role of a monarch, looking towards a future of peace, and handling all the ins and outs of war/battle.

The side characters are also given lots of importance and Pauline gets a lot of POV chapters, so the book is absolutely well written and dimensional and there's lots of stuff happening and developing, no one could dare to say Mary E. Pearson can't craft a story and manage several threads of information and plot at once, I just personally thought things would happen a lot differently (like way differently; all the weird relationship problems/tension/etc. caught me off guard) and I felt a bit weighted down by the pacing and the heavy emphasis on politics and war. There was a lot of it I skimmed and skipped past because it didn't seem super relevant; I still got the main points of the tale without the intricacies of detail. To be honest, I really wanted more Rafe/Lia because I tend to prefer romance plots over any others. I would have even accepted Lia getting with Kaden and them going off to rule Venda, not this weird mishmash of "eh we love each other but you know, duty and stuff" and this coming from a girl who throughout the book didn't show herself to be especially selfless or capable of really thinking stuff through. It felt... weird, like all these developments didn't match. I don't believe this is a bad book by any stretch, in spite of my complaints, it just wasn't what I was expecting it to be and it didn't appeal to my particular tastes which was disappointing after how much I'd loved the first two books and how excited I was for this to come out. If I hadn't been so excited, I might not have felt so deeply about the book.

Still gets three stars for being well written and developed, but loses two because of the disappointment and dislike that I personally felt from reading this. I was up all night finishing it (as it is a nearly 700 page book), so after some sleep I'll return and pound out some more specifics and details.

A let down

Hate it when the first two books of a series are intriguing and the third fails to deliver on the promises its predecessors, which is what happened here.

#LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD#

1) Too much going on. We had two intense relationship storylines established in the first two books, deep character development in progress, traitors in Morrighan, unrest in Dalbreck, a doomsday army invading, a battle, a radical new peace negotiated and the resolutions all squished into one book. It did none of them justice. The romance fizzled, the revelation of the traitors contrived, character development halted and overall, just rushed. There are long stretches describing travel and preparation but very few actually doing anything.

2) Kaden. Poor Kaden. Perhaps the most interesting character aside from the Komizar and he got maybe 10 pages to himself. His feelings for Lia don't ebb naturally or grow (I'd hoped, I was rooting for him) but disappear abruptly and just as abruptly materialize for Pauline. He gets to kill his cruel father but there's no emotional growth or closure. He had a burgeoning will of his own in book 2 but he returns as Lia's lapdog in book 3.

3) Rafe. He and Lia either needed to get their act together or get over it. They can't communicate worth a damn and fight when they end up at cross purposes but then pine all the time they're apart. I wasn't overly fond of him to start but as of book 3 I find him cliche to the point of cardboard.

4) Lia. She goes from wanting to not be royal to wanting to be THE royal. And overnight she goes from having the potential to lead to being queen of everything, issuing orders left and right and everyone hops to it. She was reviled as a traitor one moment and hailed as a savior the next. She goes from not having the gift and not understanding it to using it for EVERYTHING. Including as a very fancy microphone mid-battle.

5) Morrighan storyline and the battle. Something that was clearly in works for years was resolved in a matter of days. So much potential, wasted.

6) the ending. Abrupt, poorly resolved. It just...ended.

So, overall, I was disappointed. A complex and multifaceted story was reduced to easy outs and deus ex machina solutions. I suggest stopping at Heart of Betrayal and writing your own end-at no profit, of course.

An Incredibly Epic and Amazing Finale!

Mary E. Pearson's The Beauty of Darkness was one of my most anticipated reads of this year and I can happily say that it does not disappoint! It has everything I loved about the series from the beginning! Romance, action, betrayals, deceptions, action, and a good dose of humor here and there! The Beauty of Darkness was an emotional and gut wrenching read that held me riveted from the very first page to the very last page!

We pick up pretty much where we left off and it's no surprise to say that Lia survived her serious injuries though it did take time. So much happens in this one, it's hard to give even the briefest of summaries, without spoilers of course and without rehashing the entire story, but needless to say Lia has a big and epic journey on her hands, if the 679 pages didn't already clue you in!

Lia and Rafe are together again and as they head back to Dalbreck, Lia's gift chimes in that all is not well back in her home of Morrighan and she feels the need to return, despite being labeled a traitor and criminal to her kingdom. This causes a lot of arguments with her and Rafe and my heart ached for them, because I could see both their points reasonably, but it seemed neither one could truly do the same. Kaden joins the party as well and that itself brought up new predicaments. Who can we truly trust in this situation? Trouble is brewing and an enemy is rising. Lia will need all the help she can get.

Fair warning, the pacing to this one isn't quite as action packed and fast paced as one might like. It's a little slower, but trust me when I say it's still phenomenal all the way through! Each moment will pack an emotional punch of some kind. There were so many powerful gut wrenching moments in this one that I couldn't read fast enough! Too bad life had to get in my way! As it was, I still ate up the pages of this one in three days, not fill days mind you, but there was a good dose of reading in these busy days! I was lost to the world of Mary's Remnant Chronicles and returning to reality at each stopping point was always a bitter disappointment! I had to know what was going to happen here!

I started making my own predictions regarding a few things. And I was happy to see that I was right about the important ones! Yay! But of dear god, it took forever for me to be able to breathe properly! The tension of those final reveals was so intense...I was scared for a time, my heart beating rapidly, tears starting in the back of my eyes thinking it might not go the way it NEEDED to...but I stubbornly kept thinking it HAS to end the way I think it should! And really by a certain point of any book, you can nearly tell if the ending will be happy or not. There's only ever been a few series that ended with ripping my heart out of my chest and really at this point I can only think of one that will always haunt me. Where does this one fall? Well...I won't say just because!

The romance in this one was once again swoony and heart-melting! I love Lia and Rafe's relationship. I love how they challenge one another and yet, still hold the other in their time of need. That even despite arguments that would force them apart, they still know what's in their hearts is true. But there are many forces working against them, and their fate remains unclear.

This is perhaps one of the shortest reviews I've written for a book that I loved and enjoyed so thoroughly, but I really don't want to get into too many details and ruin any surprises for you all! Simplicity at its best. But basically, if you were at all a fan of this series from book 1, you'll be reading this one eventually and you'll discover all the magic and incredibleness of this finale for yourself in your own time! Just be sure you not to wait too long because The Beauty of Darkness is an incredibly epic read that must be devoured at once!

OK but glaring inexcusable errors concerning Methylation's role in Histamine Intolerance.

This is an Ok book and has a lot of good useful information all in one place. As someone with histamine intolerance with gene defects that code for DAO, MAO, and HNMT finding out that turmeric blocked MAO was very useful as well as finding out exactly how Vitamin C works as an antihistamine. Her charts, while somewhat confusing are also useful. With such information in mind, as an herbalist and nutritionist, I was able to search for other herbs and supplements that also block either DAO or MAO and or other critical enzymes.

However this book also has some very glaring misinformation and leaves out some extremely important information. The most glaring error of all, and there should be no excuse anymore for anyone writing on histamine intolerance to make such an error, is that the author falsely claims that Methylation is "quackery" when it comes to histamine intolerance just because she read such on Wikipedia, and also after correctly noting that ""The HNMT [Histamine N-methytransferase] enzyme catalyzes the reaction of histamine with a methyldonor to N-methylhistamine."

If Ms. de Wild-Scholten had actually researched the full methylation and histamine pathways she would have realized that Wikipedia was totally wrong about methylation's role in histamine degradation. The HNMT enzyme is a methyltransferase enzyme which means it takes SAMe as a cofactor to work and SAMe is generated by the MAT enzyme converting the amino acid Methionine into SAMe using the cofactor Magnesium and ATP. If someone is going to write a book on histamine intolerance and then go so far as to slander Carl Pfeiffer and his ground breaking work as "Histadalia/Methylation Quackery", they had better do their homework first. If Mr. Pfeiffer was alive he could have sued Ms. de Wild-Schollen for her slander.

If someone has methylation issues such as an MTHFR defect, an MAT defect, a CBS upregulation defect etc. SAMe cannot be generated or recycled properly, or is turned into homocysteine too quickly (by the CBS upregulated enzyme) and histadalia can indeed be the result. I am homozygeous (two bad copies, one from each parent) on the gene that codes for the MAT enzyme, and have many other defects in the methyl cycle as well (including the genes that code for both critical MTHFR enzymes). In addition I am homozygeous for defective genes that code for both the critical DAO enzymes and the MAO A enzyme, and heterozygous for all my HNMT enzymes except one. The minute I took 500 mg of methionine I woke up for the first time in my life with out the blinding histamine headache I had endured every morning of my life and for half of the day every day.

Granted we know much more about how the methyl cycle works now, but such a glaring error by Ms. de Wild-Scholten in this day and age is nothing short of inexcusable.

So if you choose to purchase this book, please disregard the authors misinformation concerning Methylation.

Very detailed and well-explained

I found this book to be very useful. As a high-frequency migraine sufferer, I have suspected histamine intolerance to be a primary trigger for some time. The author explains the difference between DAO and HNMT enzymes and gives valuable case-history info. A must-read for anyone with frequent migraines.

A very useful book

I bought this book a few months ago. It turns out to be very useful. The author has spent much effort in bringing together what is known from large amount of sources, and to integrate it in a general perspective. At many points the different causal pathways are described in a level of detail that is hard to find in other sources. For those interested in the complex mechanisms behind histamine intolerance who are not able or do not want to do all this work by themselves, this book is a very helpful source.

A promising find!

Natural therapy is something I’m always looking to read on, as much as possible. There have been so many reasons in my life that have caused me to want to learn the secrets of natural healing. True healing. Cure. Not just “treatment” and “alleviation of symptoms” as offered by the modern-day doctors. My cousin has cystic fibrosis, my father is a patient of CKD. It’s so difficult sometimes to see some of my loved ones suffer from diseases that are not curable by modern medical techniques.

This book is very interesting and full of information on the subject of natural healing. Short, but gives a complete overview of naturopathy and explains how natural healing is actually possible. Numerous methods of natural healing have been described and a whole chapter is dedicated to a list and description of 9 foods that have a role in healing chronic diseases! Very helpful indeed. A list of accredited naturopathic medical schools has also been included.

I think it’s a great book for anyone who’s looking for answers that conventional medicine does not provide. Highly recommended!

Take Charge of Your Health

Modern medicine is based on medication and surgery. Both are pretty scary prospects and may not be the best solutions, but that's where many doctors will take you.

There is an alternative, though, and that is the natural approach to healing. In this book, the author gives a good overview of natural medicine and a little of its history. He discusses a style of healing that can be less expensive, less invasive, and more proactive. Live more natural and you can avoid a lot of health problems. The book is well organized and easy to follow. It does not go into great depth, but does a good job of covering all the basics from spices and herbs you can use on a regular basis, to different types of natural therapies.

All in all, a solid introduction to the subject.

A nice outline for a future book

I got this as my monthly Prime free book. I am so glad I didn't pay for this. It's a few pages that feel like something the author might present as an outline to a publisher. There's no information here whatsoever. I was interested in the healing diet, but wherever it is, it's not here. A lot of these tiny books remind me of college term papers, but this doesn't contain as much information as the average term paper I wrote.

This is the one that you'll keep after the class is over. You'll come across some odd methodological issue 5 years after you buy the book and it'll be in there, explained perfectly. The section on interpretation of interactions is particularly great. You can't learn more about power and meta-analysis more efficiently than by reading the relevant chapters in here. The ethics chapter is more entertaining than anything like it in any other text. I've been teaching from this book for 9 years and still get students calling saying thanks for making them buy it.

This Rosenthal & Rosnow book is destined to be a classic (the 2nd ed. already is). Rarely will you encounter this level of philosophical breadth, statistical depth, and historical perspective so well unified in a single text in any field. And all of it is as clear as a glass of gin in the sun. I keep mine close by my desk and refer to it often.

The next generation of behavioral science students will be lucky to start with this one and have it as a lifelong reference.

We arrive in this world without instruction manuals and we grow up without an emotional toolkit. So it’s easy to lose our way.

As we go through life we amass emotional scar tissue from the knocks that we inevitably take. We become like electrical circuit boards that have got so clogged up by the silt of life that we can no longer connect with ourselves and our core beliefs, let alone with the world beyond.

All of us start out in life with a strong internal value system – a sense of what’s right and wrong and what’s fair and what’s unjust. But then life intervenes. In the cold light of reality our ideals can quickly seem na�ve, unrealistic and untenable. However strong and heartfelt our intentions, it’s hard to give effect to our beliefs when we’re struggling, stressed or in emotional pain.

Before long we’ve abandoned those values in favour of the rules we’re taught by the world. Succeed, compete and accumulate. Deep down we feel conflicted, but at the end of the day we each have to get by, don’t we?

A gulf emerges between the values we choose for our personal lives and those we live by in the world at large. In our homes and families we believe in sharing and making sure everyone’s OK. But once we step outside our front door the rules change. The common good is replaced with the quest for personal success. Within seconds we dissolves into me and we’re elbowing each other out of the way in the race to get to the finishing line. Only, of course, there isn’t one – just a horizon that moves further away the closer we get.

The Nine Principles in this book heal our wounds and return us to our centre. As you learn to apply them to your life one by one, you will be taken on a journey from me to WE. Loneliness will evaporate. You will discover a sense of purpose and you will be freed – freed to live a life that is authentic, happy and meaningful.

A set of principles for women to live by in order to find more harmony in their lives

I've followed Gillian Anderson for years, and most recently on her social media handles. Seeing her posts regarding social issues, I found that I generally agreed with her stances, and so I was excited to read the book, "We," writen by her and Jennifer Nadel.

Lets get this out of the way right off the bat - if you're a Scully/Bedelia/Stella/Media/etc fan, and you're hoping for some sort of weird intersect between a feminine manifesto and the X-Files, you're going to end up disappointed. "We" has nothing to do with any of Gillian's screen or stage work other than a few anecdotes from her life during those times. The only place you'll see any of the titles of her work mentioned by name is in the credits/about pages.

I'm not much for self-help books, which this tome most certainly is. I'm generally a pretty sarcastic person and when forced to read books like "7 Highly effective habits," I usually can't help but laugh while reading many of the passages and suggested exercises. "We" calls you out on this mindset right off the bat. Many of the centering exercises that the book has you go through say in no uncertain terms, "You might feel silly doing this, but do it anyway."

If you're entrenched in your sarcastic mindset like I am, many of the exercises in "We" will be trying and feel almost silly. It will push you out of your comfort zone. I don't consider myself an overly emotional person so I found that the affirmation and speaking exercises to be harder than the soul-searching types. "We" suggests that you go through all of the exercises as you read the book - which is what I tried initially - but the completionist in me really wanted to read through the entire volume first to get an idea of where it was headed. I'm also a pretty linear thinker so the act of stopping my reading, breaking out a notepad, writing some items down, then picking the book back up to continue felt incredibly disjointed to me. After finishing the book, I really don't think you'll be impacted by whether or not you know and understand the 9 principles before you start the first exercises.

"We" is broken up into chapters based on four "Essential Practices" - exercises which the book suggests you do on a regular basis - and nine "Principles." The Practices are things which help put you in the proper mindset of "We" and are relatively simple things like feeling gratitude towards people and providing positive feedback to yourself, from yourself. The Principles make up the true bulk of the book and are like a general set of guidelines to use in every day life. Sprinkled throughout the book are small personal anecdotes from both Jennifer Nadel and Gillian Anderson, touching on the impact of the particular principle in their life.

An example of a practice would be imaging taking care of a good friend during a tough time, writing down the things you would do for them to make them feel better. Now, do these things for yourself. An example of a principle would be Peace - taking time to really listen to your inner thoughts through things like meditation, and remembering to stop and pause to really take in your surroundings on a regular basis.

For me personally, the book did start to lose me when it started talking about spirituality and the divine. One of the major principles in the book is that of Joy, and the book relates it directly to spiritualism. "If you keep an open mind and seek out joy, you will start to have a spiritual experience." It also says things like, "Many atheists experience the divine but call it awe and wonder," - to me, neither awe nor wonder are equated to anything divine and honestly the entire section felt like a religious person's attempt to shoehorn their beliefs on something (atheism) that they didn't quite understand. Joy also goes a bit sideways for me when it starts saying things such as, "You'll become aware of coincidences and opportunities that are increasingly difficult to dismiss as happenstance. You'll notice that the trust you once found hard to practice has crystallized into a faith that you are being taken care of." I liked the general theme of the Principle, I just sort of mentally fuzzed out and ignored that whole bit on the divine and spiritual.

Towards the end of the book after the nine principles takes a more activist stance at life. One of the major beliefs put forward in "We" is the thought that women acting as a whole can create a huge and impactful influence the world. This includes becoming more active in social outreach or political issues. The last bit touches on women's issues such as paid maternity leave, the glass ceiling, wage equality, and so forth. It urges women to become interested and active in women's rights issues. The appendix includes quite a few resources and suggestions on starting a "We-based" community.

All-in-all, "We" is an interesting manifesto and I plan on working through the suggested exercises for a prolonged time period. I did definitely see some of my negative habits mentioned in this book and there are absolutely areas I feel I could improve on for myself. I also plan on sharing this book with a few female friends of mine to see if they want to follow along with me and compare notes. After reading books like these, I often wish I could speak directly to the writers and pick their brains - I always feel like many of these books would come across more poignantly if they were more personalized. Perhaps one of the stops on their book tour will wander close to Texas.

We Speaks of the "Courage to be Vulnerable" and "Daring Greatly"

We have only to examine the world around us to see that Millions have NOT gotten over racism and sexism. Negativity is far to often ingrained in Us from an early age. "Any idiot can burn down a barn." We acknowledges that WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS. We have nothing to fear but we might be open to learning from Ms. Anderson's and Ms. Nadel's example. They have lived lives. They have found Value, Strength, and Reward in their choices. They bravely sought to share their intimate details with others--knowing that they might be subject to ridicule or accused of pretension. As a Texan, I think that Our Dr. Brene Brown would say that they had the "Courage to be Vulnerable" and were "Daring Greatly". BRAVA!!! We could all benefit from the learning, healing gifts of integrity, intention, sharing, gratitude, and goodwill--to others and to ourselves. Ms. Anderson and Ms. Nadel are to be lauded for their efforts to Communicate in a world where far too often "the back-of-a-hand" is the instinctive reflex. Let us revisit the work's intent as stated on its Amazon page: "By combining tools that are psychological, political and spiritual, WE takes readers on a life-changing journey. It asks: Why are so many of us "and our daughters" still, in the 21st century, locked in depression and addiction, self-criticism, and even self-harm? How much more effective and powerful would we all be if we replaced our current patterns of competition, criticism, and comparison with collaboration, cooperation, and compassion?" I believe that Ms. Anderson and Ms. Nadel's message is an Opportunity for Positive Change. It is a Worthy Manifesto that I hope fires the Imaginations of People Everywhere.

Kudos to the Manifesto

Already planning to start a Meetup.com group focused around this book, applying the Essentials and Principles discussed. What this could mean for so many of us women who have been struggling through the obstacles in our paths: the addictions, depression, self-criticisms, alienation, politics, relationships that don't support us, and the effect this has on our daughters, sons, significant others, the world at large. We, most of us, know deep inside what feels virtuous, healthy, 'right'...but so many of us lack support networks, self-validation, adequate resources to achieve a good quality of life. This well written and thoughtful book is like a drink of cool, clean water to a thirsty woman and arrives in the nick of time. We can empower ourselves and one another, and what we get from this book will be based upon our own work, diligence, commitment, and individual willingness to step into our power and step out of the shadows our experiences may have built to darken our inner brilliance. This isn't a quick fix, guaranteed results, easy answer, positive thinking, magical solution to our problems that makes false feel-good claims. This is a get down to work, dip your toes in the river of life book filled with encouragement, examples, suggestions, and encourages readers to seek outside professional guidance to deal with whatever issues may require such guidance, warns readers it could be a bit dangerous to undertake what's necessary to wake up to yourself. Addictions, abuse, mental health issues, physical illnesses are some of the actual circumstances requiring outside help. The authors want us to be safe, to seek healthy support, to heal, and to grow. The guidance offered in this book works if you work it, and the results will be different for each reader but so worth the journey.

Beautiful and poetic first novel

I am stunned that this is Celeste Ng's first novel. I was instantly drawn into this book, with its beautifully drawn characters and superb writing. On its surface, the story is a mystery: What led to the death of Lydia Lee, a sixteen-year-old honor student with (supposedly) everything to live for? In reality, the mystery goes far deeper, into the lives of each member of the family. By the end of the book, the reader is fully in sympathy with each character.

The novel, which takes place in the late 70s, begins with Lydia's death. Was it murder? Was it suicide? Or was it something else? The reader spends most of the novel thinking one thing, only to be surprised at the end with the truth. The author delves into the lives of each family member: James, the father, who never felt really at home in any situation; Marilyn, the mother, whose dreams were shelved by the demands of marriage, family, and the times; Nathan, the older brother, whose brilliance is overlooked; Lydia, the golden child burdened with all the frustrated aspirations of her parents; and Hannah, the overlooked afterthought of a child, a silent but keen observer of everyone in her family. (I was torn between imagining the author as Lydia or as Hannah; I suspect she is an amalgam of both.)

Many chapters in this novel focus on just one character, telling the story from his or her point of view. The reader is led to an understanding of just how profoundly even the best intentions can go terribly awry. Once again, we see people living out their own frustrated dreams through their children, who may or may not be on board. The term "helicopter parent" comes to mind, though this idea was not in vogue until the 90s. In addition, issues of race in America and women's roles are explored through the parents, James and Marilyn, who came of age in the 60s and early 70s at the height of the sexual and civil rights revolutions. Even gay identity comes into play, and remember that this novel is set in 1977, not 2014.

I am compelled to praise the writing of this book. Both psychologically astute and poetic, it draws the reader into the story and evokes sympathy and awe. We see the devastating grief that overtakes each member of the family as he or she tries to see why Lydia died and what he or she may have done to prevent it. I also loved the way the author treated memory, that old deceiver, who smoothes out that which we cannot bear to recall.

I do not think this book is marketed as a YA novel, but it is certainly a book that parents and teenagers may profitably read and discuss together. The issues are fresh and relevant, and I can imagine that meaningful discussions and insights may result. Highly recommended for all readers 14 and above.

A tour de force in storytelling...

How is it possible that this is a first novel? It is so exquisite, so marvelously perfect, so regally quiet and elegant that surely, it must come from the hands of a old soul author. But no. This is Celeste Ng's first novel, and in it, she has painted such a deeply felt, original story. This book shall remain with me for the rest of my days.

Everything I Never Told You is a story of secrets, of love, of longing, of lies, of race, of identity, and knowledge. The story begins with the death of Lydia, daughter of Marilyn and James, which is told in the first sentence and slowly revealed through the book. Her death drives the narrative, and yet, this story is bigger, grander than this central mystery. Marilyn wanted to defy society's narrow vision of her life and become a doctor, while James is trying to overcome humble beginnings and a society judging him based on his race. Together, they conventions, marry and create a family. Nathan, oldest son on his way to Harvard, Lydia, the middle sister and favorite one, and Hannah, truly growing up invisible. Together, Ng has created a complex, complicated family that rings so true on every page. There isn't a false note in the story.

Perhaps the power of this book lies in the writing of Ng. Her prose is lyrical and light, allowing you to float in the scenes, often between characters, as if you are a literary ghost spying on these people. She moves her story along when it needs to, and allows certain scenes to linger when needed. The effect is magnificent. She also embues the realities of racism, that appropriately jar the reader, which at first seem to be just a "matter of the times" (she painfully uses the word Oriental to describe people) but in reality plays a bigger role in the story. I appreciated it.

By the time you read the final page, you realize Ng has managed to create such a reality, and that when it ends, there is a sense of loss. Much like the family must deal with the loss of Lydia, we must deal with the loss of these imperfect and real people. This book reveals much, about them, about us, about our country, about our society. It is a book that begs for conversation, that begs to be discussed, interpreted, and argued over. It is a book that will be with you for a long time.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

A Broken Family

This book could easily be titled, “A Failure to Communicate.” It’s a startling story of a family with private demons and deceptions that really shouldn’t be private. No one can speak up. No one wants to rock the boat. Blame is pointed in the wrong direction, often internally. It seems to begin with a missing teenage girl, but it really started long before that.

The parents learn that their daughter, who they thought was popular, really wasn’t. As far as they come to believe, she had no friends at all. That, too, is untrue. But then nothing is as it seems.

This is a beautifully crafted, emotional novel of the unintentional harms we do to those we love, how we see what we want to see, and how we interpret the present through our own past.
